Hideous Lens

Dust, B&H Photo
4 May 2014
  • Excerpt: The lens exhibits the worst barrel distortion I have ever seen on ANY lens. Unless you want to spend all your time squaring up images in post, avoid this lens. Canon has a lot of nerve putting the L glass brand on this lens. The EF 28-135 that came with my 40D is much superior. I bought this lens as a package with my 5D III. What a mistake. do your self a favor and buy the body only and get a different lens.
  • Cons: Terrible Distortion

To be decided

myproteomics, Ebay
7 December 2013
  • Summary: I have brought the Canon EF 24-105 mm F/4.0 L IS USM Lens from The Bigvalueinc on Nov 30 via ebay and received the product yesterday. Today, I tried it to take picture but I found the hard time to focus in AF. Suppose, this lens with USM should be able to focus very quick. I am wondering whether the product has problem or I didn't use it correctly? Hope the company can help me out from this.

fails on two fronts

johnnyjohnny, Adorama
30 October 2012
  • Excerpt: i think this is a great lens if you know where it fails and don't need it for those uses. 1. no matter what some reviewers have claimed, this lens will not shoot all that well fully open at night or in low light. at best i'd say at f 4 this will give you fair to middling resolution. 2. very bad distorted perspective, like a big bowing, when shooting anything with noticeably straight lines.
  • Pros: Superior build quality
  • Cons: bowed perspective, fair at best sharpness fully wide open aperture

Doesn't work with the 60d flash

Smiley, B&H Photo
1 January 2011
  • Excerpt: I just purchased the 60d and the Canon L series 24mm-105mm lens. My first shots were indoors and all using the flash. The lens worked great but all of the pictures had a dark semi-circle in the middle of the bottom of the image. After doing some experiments the problem was clearly the lens blocking the built-in flash on the 60d. Removing the lens hood helped but the shadow was still there.
  • Cons: Poor in Low Light

Low optical quality for a L lens

Eric G., B&H Photo
26 August 2010
  • Excerpt: I'm coming from medium-format film photography with prime lenses (Mamiya and Rollei) and this is the first lens I use with digital camera, bought as a bundle with an EOS 5D. I must say that I was rapidly very disappointed with its quality. I choose it after reading many reviews but using it didn't bring me half of what I expected: heavy chromatic aberrations, lack of details in the edges, heavy distortions... And all this with a tagged "L" quality lens... and its price!
  • Pros: Fast / accurate auto-focus, Versatile lens
  • Cons: Distortion, Optical quality, Overpriced, Soft edges

Disappointed with first copy!

R. Lloyd, Amazon
1 May 2006
  • Summary: I'd read all of the great reviews of this lens and ordered one. I compared sharpness of the 24-105 to my Canon 17-85, 70-200 F2.8IS and the tamron 28-75. All three of these (YES EVEN THE 17-85), absolutely exceeded the 24-105 in contrast and sharpness. The 24-105 was not even close to the other three. All were shot at F5.6 at about 75-80mm. The 24-105 looked like a $100 lens compared to the other three! That copy is on it's way back to Amazon.

  • Summary: This lens has been out for over 6 years and is not worth the price you are selling it for. Come very sort it out. I don't mind paying a little bit more than high street but this is ridiculous!!!
