not so great

  • Excerpt: After all the great reviews for this lens I expected much more. I compared it to my Hoya close -lenses. The Canon 100mm f2.8 IS was only slightly more sharp. What really surprised me was how dark it was for a f2.8 lens. In my comparison test, the Hoya close-up lens was much brighter.

Not sure I like this Lens

Cgil, Adorama

  • Excerpt: I bought this lens for taking macro photographs of fauna and flora, portraits and some commercial products. After using it for a little over a month I'm not exactly sure I like this lens. Here is why. First the focus is slow on FULL, I found it easier to use a manual focus, not good if photographing bugs. The macro shots I took of a tulip didn't come out with a crisp focus I was hoping for. Pictures of a spring up close did come out nicely though.
  • Pros: Easily Interchangeable
  • Cons: Blurry Focus, Slow Focus

pretty noisy!

  • Excerpt: I only took a dozen of so test shots with this lens. Auto-focus basically sounded like a muffled steel trash can rolling down the driveway. I have already returned it [...]. I'll probably get a 180mm instead.
  • Pros: Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Slow Focus

  • Conclusion: I either have a bad copy or it's not nearly as sharp as the non-IS version. I'm sending it back to the store and will try and get a replacement.
  • Pros: Better built than the non IS version
  • Cons: not as sharp as the non-IS version

  • Excerpt: This lens is nowhere as sharp as the Nikon 105mm 2.8 VR micro lens. I know because I also have that lens.
  • Pros: light weight, IS helps
  • Cons: all plastic lens. pricey. not very sharp
