Summary: I know you've all been holding your breath waiting for Ridge's annual product review, as I been flooded with messages from RIA's faithful asking me if I've had any relatively pleasant shopping experiences and the answer is "Yes". And now that I'm fully recovered from the 'git's visit, I'm ready to share. Went on-line looking for a new laptop and landed, once again, on Toshiba's website.
Summary: I was in the market for a 14" laptop with a discrete graphics card and this notebook was one of the few that met my requirements. I decided to buy this one over the others after comparing reviews. Also I just received this computer and I have not played around with it much. Good: It's a Toshiba, good processor/gpu combo, harmon/kardon speakers, you can play music while computer is off, you can charge usb device while power is off, backlit keyboard, HDMI out, eSATA port,...
Summary: It took me forever to find a laptop this small (14' screen) with the graphics card that I wanted, but it was definitely worth the wait/search. I don't lag when I play games like StarCraft 2 or League of Legends, and the graphics look really good. The only real problem I've been having with this laptop is that it takes a long time to start up (maybe 2-3 minutes). I'm not really sure why because only AIM starts automatically.
Summary: Bought this notebook for daughter for college. She wanted a 13 or 14" notebook that was fast with reasonable battery life, so I was looking for an nVidia Optimus enabled unit with an optical drive. Fussy daughter didn't like styling of ASUS bamboo series or metal cases from ASUS and others, so had to settle for the not yet reviewed Toshiba. Seems to do everything it was supposed to do and is probably similar to other Optimus enabled units.
Summary: This laptop presents a good price/quality ratio. However, I have two problems with its design: - the fan is on the right side of the laptop, just where you would put your mouse (for right handed people). It can get really hot. - the fan noise is loud. this could be just my laptop. But it is certainly annoying. Overall, it is a good laptop for this price.
Summary: Bought a Satellite A105-S4054 for a good price of $799 in August of 06 and haven't had a problem yet. It does come with way to much pre-installed garbage, but what big brand computer doesn't now. Good for what i am using it for, college work, internet, music and dvds. Good quality sound for a laptop, good bright LCD screen. Battery life is sufficent for my uses, but I'm sure some find it a bit short. Overall a good product so far, especially at the price i got mine at.
