Expert Review

Tweak Town
4 March 2011
  • Excerpt: The Toshiba NB550D comes with a 10.1-inch glossy display, but instead of running an Intel Atom CPU, like a typical netbook, the NB550D is based on the AMD C-50 CPU (1GHz) with ATI Radeon HD 6250 graphics. It also comes with a 250GB HDD & 1GB of RAM (it supports up to 4GB, but you'll have up upgrade to a 64-bit OS). On the left side from back to front, you'll find the power jack, Ethernet port, VGA, USB, and microphone and headphone jacks.

Review Toshiba NB550D (AMD Fusion) Netbook

Notebookcheck
22 February 2011
  • Summary: Goodbye to Atom? The NB550D is Toshiba’s latest flagship netbook, featuring the new AMD C-50 APU along with an AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics unit and high-quality Harman Kardon speakers. Is it the perfect entertainer for €349, even without a matt HD display?
  • Pros: Workmanship and colours, Easy to upgrade, Acceptable range of ports, Good touchpad, Smooth HD playback, Efficient cooling system, Harman Kardon loudspeakers, Impressive battery life, The rubberized surfaces, the long battery life and the comfortable touchpad.
  • Cons: Keyboard layout and lettering, Glossy display with standard resolution, Poor contrast and depth of black, Too much pre-installed bloatware, Mediocre office performance (1 GB RAM), Few accessories, A base configuration of 2 GB of RAM, and a better, matt, screen.

Toshiba NB550D review

Stuff.tv
29 June 2011
  • Summary: There’s just one important thing to know about Toshiba’s NB550D. Forget the lightweight, slimline build and 10 hour battery life. They’re good, but find us a netbook that you can’t say that about these days and we’d be impressed. What makes the NB550D interesting is that it’s the first netbook to use AMD’s new Fusion processor. Every other netbook of note since Asus’ first Eee PC has been built around the same, almost unchanging, Intel Atom chip.

Toshiba NB550 netbook review: AMD Fusion-powered netbook with HDMI port

Good Gear Guide.au
31 May 2011
  • Summary: The Toshiba NB550D netbook uses the AMD Fusion platform to supply good overall performance and better-than-usual multimedia features for a netbook. Its HDMI port allows users to connect it directly to a big-screen TV and its Harmon Kardon speakers produce the best sound we've heard from a netbook to date. We like this netbook a lot, but we wish it had better battery life, a less glossy screen and a slightly smoother touchpad.
  • Pros: HDMI port, good performance for a netbook, good speakers, good build quality and looks
  • Cons: Battery life not great, video playback was a little choppy on a Full HD television, touchpad texture was a little too rough, very reflective screen

  • Conclusion: We were very impressed with AMD Fusion, but apart from its impressive speakers the NB550D is a fairly unadventurous netbook.
