Summary: Samsung's finally made an affordable ultrabook, and the 13-inch Series 5 Ultra is a well-priced and far slimmer product than its 14-inch cousin. Still, it's not a runaway bargain, and it feels like corners have been cut in adapting it from the stellar Series 9's design. You also might want to wait a few weeks for Intel's latest processors to arrive.
Pros: The 13-inch Samsung Series 5 Ultra NP530U3B is a more affordable ultrabook than the executive-line Series 9, and has plenty of ports crammed into its sleek body. Get the hard-drive version, and you'll shave an extra $150 off the price.
Cons: The touch pad, keyboard, and battery life aren't as excellent as you'd expect from a laptop this attractive-looking, and a plastic feel throughout makes it feel like a step down from a MacBook Air, which it is, in price.
Samsung Series 5 (13-inch) - An Ultra-priced Ultrabook
6 May 2012
Excerpt: The Samsung Series 5 Ultra 13-inch laptop, is an Ultrabook that sets out to give you the best of all the desired aspects - performance, build quality and portability at a great price. But will it succeed in creating the perfect Ultrabook? Sit tight as we detail all you need to know of this newcomer.
Pros: Good value, Matte Screen, Build quality, Pleasant keyboard to use
Cons: Sharp edges near palm rest, Slightly heavier than other Ultrabooks
Conclusion: Sure, sleek and elegant is always nice. But, in our book, utility and productivity at a reasonable price outweigh beauty every time. The Series 5 Ultra provides value in a relatively thin and light machine, even if it won't win any beauty contests. Add it all up—long battery life, a bigger screen, an optical drive, great-looking graphics, and solid performance—and you end up with a no-nonsense, highly portable laptop at a fair price.
Pros: Excellent display, Included optical drive, Long battery life, Above-average performance, Comfortable keyboard, Plenty of ports, Good Webcam and sound
Cons: Plastic bottom, Some unrefined, uncomfortable edges
Summary: You may be slightly confused - is this an ultrabook, or just a mainstream laptop on a diet? With the Series 5, Samsung is smartly appealing to a wider demographic than a device otherwise does. This is meant for someone who wants consistent power on a laptop that is comfortable enough to carry around, without compromising on the display size. You are essentially paying for the portability bit.
Pros: Well built, Stable performance, Non-reflective display is very comfortable, Humongous hard drive, Doesn't miss out on features - graphics card, HDMI and USB 3.0
Cons: Battery life isn't the best around, Dedicated graphics, but limited capabilities, On the heavier side
Conclusion: The Samsung Series 5 offers a workmanlike casing and contains a machine that's distinctly run-of-the-mill. Performance is okay but not outstanding, as is the screen, and the battery life left something to be desired. That said, it comes at a fully justifiable midrange price.
TEST: Samsung Series 5 Ultra: God og rimelig lettvekter
18 March 2012
Pros: Matt skjerm. Lett og kompakt. Tre usb-porter. HDMI og Ethernet uten adapterbruk.
Cons: Styreflate. Litt høy pris for SSD-versjonen. Skulle gjerne hatt versjon med høyere skjermoppløsning.
