Review Samsung 540U3C Ultrabook

Notebookcheck
7 January 2013
  • Summary: That special touch. The Samsung Series 5 540U3C is the successor to its forefather, the 530U3C. On the outside, the two notebooks look as similar as a pair of eggs; but in terms of the technological innards, Samsung has jazzed up the compact subnotebook with Windows 8 and a touchscreen -- and they've affixed an asking price of 1000 Euros (~$1320). Are the new alterations worth the steep 200 Euros (~$261) price jump?
  • Pros: Good mobility, Lightweight and compact dimensions, Bright touchscreen, Operating elements, Maintenance-friendly, The brushed aluminum surfaces and the attractive inner values like the bright touchscreen.
  • Cons: Display hinges, Contrast and black values, For a street price of a whole 1000 Euros (~$1320), more than one of the three USB ports should be of the USB 3.0 variety. The display could have better contrast and black values. Also, since we are dealing with a high-mobility device, a Kensington Lock would be desirable.

  • Summary: Ultrabook update. We reviewed the Samsung Series 5 530U3B-A01DE in mid-March 2012. The ultrabook has now been revised to feature an Intel Ivy Bridge dual-core processor. Virtually everything else, including the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of 799 Euro ($999 USD), remains unchanged. In this review, we will examine exactly what has changed and who would benefit from the revision.
  • Pros: Elegant design, USB 3.0 and HDMI, Matte screen, Good brightness & illumination, Easy maintenance, Application performance, Battery life, The increased application and graphics performance, the matte screen and the ultrabook’s seemingly timeless design.
  • Cons: VGA adapter no longer included, Screen’s limited opening angle, Contrast and high black value, No Turbo during load, No full-blown solid state drive, Increased temperature rates, A better contrast and Turbo Boost of the installed ULV CPU or a more efficient cooling management that can cope with the components’ performance and waste heat.
