Samsung Series 5 Chromebook Review

Digitaltrends
21 June 2011
  • Excerpt: You watch all your TV through Netflix. Check your email through the Web. Pump out those pesky TPS reports in Google Docs. So why do you need anything but a browser, again? Google says you don’t. The company’s custom-built Chrome OS sheds the pleasantries of Word, Photoshop and yes, even Solitaire in favor of just a browser.
  • Pros: Quick boot speeds, Long battery life, Attractive design, Comfortable keyboard, large trackpad, Respectably loud speakers
  • Cons: Extraordinarily limited functionality, Nearly useless offline, Dismal Wi-Fi reliability, Overpriced, No smaller than a netbook, Minimal inputs and outputs, Can’t handle HD video playback, Poor multitouch performance

Review: Samsung Series 5 Chromebook

Wired
14 June 2011
  • Excerpt: Let’s get one thing straight: The Chromebook is not really about the hardware. Samsung’s Series 5 notebook is the mere physical vehicle for Google’s cloud-based vision of the future. It’s a world where users aren’t bogged down by needless accoutrements like cumbersome operating systems, optical drives or high-capacity local storage. Which is why Chromebooks don’t come with any of that stuff. Want to store your digital photos?

Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook

Pocket Lint
22 June 2012
  • Conclusion: There's not much wrong with the Chromebook hardware. It's actually a pretty decent machine, it has better connectivity than most Ultrabooks and is certainly a lot cheaper. That said, it's not as powerful as a normal laptop - many costing little more than the £380 of this machine - and it is still frustratingly limited. What bothers us most, perhaps, is that the Chromebook isn't light, and it isn't all that cheap.
  • Pros: Simple enough for anyone to use, stable, secure, some good web apps are available, Google's services are very well integrated and useful
  • Cons: Not that fast, horribly over-priced, too limited for most users, to heavy, limited file support

Samsung Chromebook review (2012 model)

wired.co.uk
3 April 2012
  • Conclusion: For quick internet access, checking emails, making notes or emergency Facebook communiqués, the Chromebook is a lightweight, quiet (it has no fan or other moving parts), and cheap alternative to a PC or laptop. But it's annoyingly slow, and the limitations of the web-based Chrome OS will still be too much of an obstacle for many.
  • Pros: Decent battery life, fast boot-up, cheap-ish
  • Cons: Slow processor, useless without internet connection

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook review

Stuff.tv
20 July 2011
  • Summary: Remember netbooks? They’re back, and called Chromebooks. They run Chrome OS (see panel, right) – Google’s vision of a computer that works almost universally through a browser window. And they’ve arrived in the midst of a touchscreen tablet revolution. That’s like turning up to a black tie do in a toga. Only slightly more embarrassing.

Samsung Chromebook Série 5

CNET
23 June 2011
