The IBM ThinkPad 240 - A sub-£200 gem?

  • Excerpt: Watching the ICT market depresses me. Only a couple of short years ago I invested in the biggest desktop hard disk drive I could ever find - A roomy 120GB Seagate. Now we are up to 750GB, yet these cost only half of what I paid for my drive. The same is the story with the ThinkPad 240 - I remember when these were £1,699 brand new. Luckily I never bought one new, but I did receive one second hand a few months ago.
  • Pros: Small size, Lights, Looks smart !
  • Cons: Some say it looks bland, Small size limits functionality

  • Excerpt: Notebook design is a compromise between 'built-in' features and portability - this one is very portable! In order to keep the system as small and as light as possible, IBM have pared this down to the absolute minimum, to the extent that it doesn't even have a floppy drive or CD in the case (these can be plugged in - if you need them) How small is small? - well - just a little bigger than the 10x8" screen, so it's certainly sub-A4.
  • Pros: Small lightweight and very portable
  • Cons: Relatively slow and no internal FFD or CD

A Mixed Bag

  • Excerpt: I bought an IBM Thinkpad 240 at about half price and in new condition from Dabs.com. At first, I was very pleased with it. I magaed to get Linux running along with windows and it was all fine and dandy. However, soon the screen started flickering, and it soon got very bad. I rang IBM and they said that yes, it was covered and yes, they would fix it. I recived it back in about a week with a completely new screen. Not bad!
  • Pros: Small, light, fast, cheap
  • Cons: Very annoying recurring problems

  • Excerpt: I recently won an IBM Notebook 240. Not having much experience with computers, I found everything easy to set up and use. The instructions were very clear on how to set up and use the special functions. A big plus is the free 24/7 800 IBM help desk number if you have any problems. The 240 notebook is very light weight and compact. Thus the 240 makes a great travel notebook by taking up less space (such as air travel.) But yet it is very durable.
  • Pros: Lightweight Compact Trac - Point
  • Cons: none

  • Excerpt: I recently bought the IBM 240, and i thought WOW. Its size and weight are incredible. In fact, these were one of the main factors, why I chose to buy this particular notebook. All the peripherals are so thin and compact, that you do not think of them as being a hassle to carry around with. No, quite the opposite actually. The quality of the screen and the internal modem are fantastic.
  • Pros: Size and Weight
  • Cons: Small Keyboard
