Excerpt: Our review unit is armed with an Intel Core i5-2520M operating at 2.50GHz (3.2GHz Turbo Boost), 4GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 memory, a 320GB 7200RPM hard drive, Intel Centrino 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, a removable 6-cell (62WHr) Li-Ion battery, a DVD +/-RW SuperMulti DL optical drive with LightScribe and a 14.0" LED-backlit HD anti-glare display with a native resolution of 1366 x 768.
Summary: Boxy Business Notebook. A vivid, high-quality display? The Elitebooks constitute the best that HP has to offer in terms of business laptops. Can the 2011 series maintain this good reputation or even improve it?
Pros: Sturdy, High-Quality Case, Matte, High-Res Display, Variety of Ports, Administration Options (BIOS), Long Battery Life, Excellent Application Performance, Quiet under Normal Conditions, Case Temps Low, Low Power Consumption, Docking Port and Battery Slice, Position of Ports, Hard as steel! Such a sturdy case is a rarity outside of the specially "toughened-up" class of laptops. The ample options in terms of connectivity including the docking port and battery slice dock.
Cons: Few Viewing Angles, Low Screen Contrast, Loud When GPU Under Stress, CPU Downsampling When GPU Under Stress, Poor Gaming Performance, More viewing angles, a brighter screen and the colors of an IPS screen.
Summary: HP has created an excellent business partner in the EliteBook 8460p. The redesign is sleek and durable, it performs well, and lasts a long time on a charge. We also like the above-average sound quality, comfy keyboard, and smooth and accurate glass touchpad, as well as the helpful security tools.
Conclusion: The HP EliteBook 8460p proves that serious business notebooks can look good and perform well as well. The screen and the super-smooth touchpad are stand-outs, as is the sound quality (for a business machine). It is hefty though, both in bulk and price, but an excellent specification means the only feature you could wish to add would be HDMI. Battery life is average, but if this machine is to serve as a desktop replacement then that's unlikely to be a problem.
Pros: Powerful, packed with ports and features for the business users, good screen, better-than-average sound
Cons: Big and pricey, you may be paying for features you won't use, standard battery life could be better

10 January 2012
