  • Conclusion: Gateway makes several significant improvements with the M680XL. It's thinner and lighter than most systems with a 17-inch widescreen, and it has the best battery life in its class.
  • Pros: Great battery life. Thinner and lighter than the previous generation. Good performance.
  • Cons: No internal TV tuner. Will need a hard drive upgrade.

  • Conclusion: One of our game-simulation benchmarks -- AquaMark3 -- crashed, but every other program we tried ran like clockwork, and fast clockwork at that. Helped by 1GB of DDR-2/400 memory (add $300 for 2GB) and a 60GB, 7,200-rpm Hitachi hard disk, the Gateway racked up a BAPCo SysMark 2004 score of 150...
  • Pros: Lighter weight and longer battery life than most 17-inch-screen super-jumbo laptops; above-average CPU and graphics performance
  • Cons: Keyboard layout takes a little practice; no Bluetooth; seems a natural for Media Center configuration, but Gateway doesn't offer one
