    28 January 2012

Its been an year since I have been using this beauty and I am not calling it beauty based on its looks but its performance. I should say I am pretty impressed by it. From what I read online about Dell Laptops, I under estimated its quality. It seems to have very good hardware components both the look-wise and configuration-wise. I ordered it from Dell website(cost around 1400$), it took almost a month for it to be delivered. The Dell website does offer very good customization options for this laptop including the processor(i3,i5,i7), RAM, Hard disk(or SSD if you chose to go with that), Disk Drive(with an option for Bluray Reader), Display type, Keyboard etc. I went in with the configuration of i7 740QM(2nd Generation Sandy Bridge processors were introduced just after I bought the laptop), 6GB RAM(max is 8 GB), Back-light Keyboard(a handy feature for an extra $25, you can chose the ordinary one if you wish), Double Layer DVD Writer, 9-cell battery(helps in extending battery little longer and also gives an elevation for better air flow), 2GB Nvidia GT 435M Graphic Card(you can chose 1 GB and presently a better graphic card is available), FHD B+RGLED Display of 1920x1080 resolution and the rest were just default ones. It has 3 USB ports, one of which is a USB 3.0/eSATA port, LAN port, HDMI output port, 9-in-1 Card reader and a display port(not sure what it is) . The battery life wasn't too great even though it had a 9-cell battery, I guess it must be because of the power required for the processor and the graphic card. It gave me around 3 to 3 1/2 hours of battery back up when not using high processor demanding processes. I have to say the sound is the best feature of this laptop. It has JBL speakers with a sub-woofer situated underneath. The sound seemed amazing and is way better than most of the laptops around. The keyboard and a decently sized touch-pad work very well, I have a back-light keyboard which comes in very handy most of the time rather than letting the light from the screen to illuminate your keyboard. There are 3 capacitive touch buttons above the keyboard for settings, shortcut key(which can be associated to any action like opening a programs or turn off display etc), sound settings respectively from left to right. This laptop has premium customer service along with Dell Alienware series, with which, if you are under warranty, any repair would be done at your house by a technician sent by Dell. I have had 2 interactions to replace a webcam and battery(problem discussed below) with the customer support which has been okay. As this is a Multimedia laptop it does do very well with processes that have a high processing power needs like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator etc. I have played plenty of games on this laptop and all of them run fine even the latest games run without any noticeable lag on high settings. But as this isn't a gaming laptop you cant play them for very long without over heating the laptop. There's another problem while over heating the left side gets hot, right where your Esc to Shift keys are present(perhaps because the Processor and Graphic card are present there), so you can feel the heat on your left fingers. Also the keys in the left side seem to go up and down when the laptop is hot for long, which change back to normal after it cools down. Also the fan starts to make lot of sound to cool down the heat. Till now I have my webcam and battery replaced. The battery problem was that it only got charged up to 90% and then would stop charging which seem to be a hardware problem. The webcam problem is however more prominent, it would turn on sometimes, initially it worked well enough and then it wouldn't. I read on lot of forums, even on dell forums that the webcam being used is faulty and that it wouldn't turn on in places with not much lighting. In order to turn it on you have to face the cam towards a light source or place something warm near it(Ridiculous! yes but it worked). Also there is no VGA port present. Also the laptop seems bulky and heavy(the new XPS 15z is thinner and lighter). Overall I have to say Im pretty impressed by this laptop even though it has some minor problems but I would recommend it to anyone who needs a good laptop
