Summary: Piece of slow junk. Feels like you are on a computer from the 1990's. Not even useful for simple things like surfing the internet...unless you don't mind waiting long periods of time to accomplish anything you click on. Stay away!!
Summary: It was a great computer, real fast and powerful, plus it has DVD. But I stumbled over the power chord and it fell off my coffee table. I took it apart to see if I could fix it the operation was a failure. RIP.
Summary: My family bought a Dell Inspiron 5100 for my sister in 2003 (a decade ago), and made sure to get the best available at the time: 2.6Ghz CPU, 32MB video, 512MB RAM, 30GB hard drive, Windows XP. She loved it. She completed her Master's degree on it, took it everywhere when traveling, and even named it. But then, five years ago, she set it aside (out of necessity) for a newer Mac laptop.
Summary: i bought the dell because of the price and i am very satisfied with it. It works great with room for upgrade. Dell has always made a good product and this dell inspiron 5100 is another good example of Dell quality. I would recommend this product to any one looking for a good stable computer.
Summary: Even though it is an old computer (made in 2002) it is great for someone who is new to computers -pros: Windows Xp Pro Wifi enabled faster than some modern day computers -Cons: A bit heavy about 8 pounds Original dosn't come with DVD drive only cd So overall it would be great gift for someone who would want a decent laptop, just for web, and emails
Dell Inspiron 5100: Fast unreliable beast. like Ford GT of laptops.

Summary: The advantage of buying Dell laptop is that they can go wrong quite often, and when lot of people face problems, they first resolve the issue and put the solution on the web. If you search on the web for Dell Inspiron 5100 / 5150, you get lots of posts with various issue. The main issues are overheating and shutting down with slightest shake. I bought my Inspiron 5150 from Dell outlet at 50% of original price, not realising what am I getting into.
Pros: FAST, Really Fast, Lot of resources on the internet to resolve any issues
Cons: Sound quality, Bit heavy at 3.5 KG, Dell restore eats up 5 GB disk space
Summary: I won't attempt here to go into the full spec of my Inspiron 5100, as the other reviewer has covered it all very well. Suffice to say mine was pretty well at the top of the range at the time. Actually, it worked like a dream for about 18 months, with no problems to speak of. Then, a month or so out of warranty, I plugged it into the mains and sparks flew (literally).
Pros: Nippy, reliable until the warranty is up...
Cons: ... when it will fry its own motherboard in despair
Excerpt: "I've now had this laptop for just under 2 years now and i have to say my experience hasn't been that bad. 40gb hard-drive, 1gb ram, 64mb gfx, 2.8 ghz processor The laptop was pre-loaded with windows xp came with a power supply and case. I paid for the package which included the additional RAM which brought the memory up to 1gb. The laptop is fairly user friendly although does present some issues with getting parts. Just recentley one of the ...
Pros: Nice Speedy Laptop
Cons: No Shaders on the Graphics Chip Limits Full Capability
Excerpt: "Had this now for about 3 months as a good quality laptop was required for work purposes. After reading many reviews I found that although people were very happy with the overall product itself, there seemed to be a major problem with overheating issues/fan problems. Since I have had this it has been used for very heavy programs and yes the laptop does get pretty hot due to the processor working overtime. Not once has it cut out or threatened ...
Pros: Efficient, fast
Cons: Bit heavy, no scroll wheel, no external volume control
