Excerpt: Bought this computer as a freshman in college. Decent for music, word processing, light internet surfing, etc. Not much else. I never tried photoshop or DVDs with it, so I don't know about that stuff. I use my iBook for the more hefty stuff. This is a good computer to take with you to class and stuff, though.
Excerpt: I bought the Dell Inspirion 1721very excited about transitioning to a laptop from a desktop, and the size of this one (17") makes that transition very easy. I'm not a huge fan of Vista, but I can deal. It runs pretty fast and doesn't give me too many problems or hangups. The problem is really with Dell's shoddy workmanship. In the first 6 months, Dell had to replace my hard drive three times.
Excerpt: The Dell Inspiron 1721 is a great computer for the average home user who does not demand a lot from their laptop. Checking email, fiddling with photos and watching movies are some of the features that have no effect on the perfrmance of this computer. It is a great size (17 inches) - big enough to have multiple windows open at once. The computer has a full keyboard (including number pad) which makes the transition from a desktop computer to a laptop much easier.
Summary: I recieved computer in the time they said it would come but when it arrived there were some issueswith the hard drive. When we looked into it (had to call a computer guy who came to the house) he found the hard drive was not screwed in to the computer and it could not find a hard drive. Why were the screws missing? After a $40 fee for computer guy the computer has been working well since( just 5 days). Hopefully no other issues will arise.
