Summary: I bought the Inspiron 15 3000 (I think the actual model name is Inspiron 3542, but anyway) as a replacement for our old family Inspiron from 5 years ago which was starting to show signs of failure, and to be honest I feel that this is a great product. I don't know why so many reviews give it such bad scores.
Summary: The Inspiron 5000 has a nice look and style to it. The silver finish is beautiful. It is a bit heavy. Definitely look for something lighter if you plan to carry it around much. My main complaint is the amount of time it takes for it to "wake up" from a sleep state. After I close the lap top, or it goes to sleep after inactivity, it takes a good minute (or longer) before it wakes up. My old Dell latitude only takes a few seconds.
Summary: This is a good choice for a student, home user or business professional who doesn't need an optical drive (CD/DVD is not in it) and who doesn't need enhanced sound or graphics for entertainment or gaming. It's well built - very sturdy with attractive aluminum top, has a brilliant (albeit not truly a high definition) display, keyboard (w/ backlighting and 10-key) and a huge 1 TB hard drive (932GB of useable space).
Pros: beautiful display backlit keyboard w/ 10 key aluminum top looks great very thin great build quality facial recognition software 30 days mcafee antivirus hdmi port media reader usb 3.0 bluetooth 4.0
Cons: poor audio from speakers not true hd display battery life under reported avg no dvd/cd drive heavy at 6lbs for no media drive integrated video integrated sound
A good, cost-effective option for college students.

Summary: I ended up buying this laptop for graduation in preparation for college this fall. I had some minor issues when I first bought it, but those were either a fault of my own or a fault not related to this computer.
Summary: I go this computer for the start of college. When I got it I had to go through it and remove all the junk software such as Amazon, Ebay, and McAfee etc. The touch screen is pretty fun except the screen appears to dim out on it's own sometimes. Will have to get it replaced. I do recommend the touch screen if you're going to get the Windows™ 8.1.
