Excerpt: If there’s one thing that might take your mind off your financial woes, it’s some good old-fashioned fragging. And Asus is happy to oblige by offering the most affordable full-fledged gaming notebook that we’ve ever tested. The G51Vx-RX05, sold exclusively through Best Buy, costs less than a grand—OK, at $999, that’s a technicality, but still, this 15-inch notebook is cheap. It’s half the cost of the 15-inch iBuypower M865TU gaming rig we reviewed in November.
Pros: Great mobile gaming on the cheap; less cumbersome than larger gaming rigs.
Summary: Gaming notebooks don't have to land you in the poor house. You don't have to spend over $3,000 to get something to play Team Fortress or Call of Duty, even if you want to dial up the settings a notch or three. The Asus G51Vx-RX05 lists at just $1049, but it gives you a great dedicated GPU, plenty of horsepower, and an integrated overclocking tool.
Pros: NVIDIA, HDMI, FireWire and eSATA ports, Very attractive design, good build quality, Backlit chiclet keyboard is fantastic, Incredible value at $1049
Cons: Less than admirable battery life, Too heavy and bulky for some users, No multitouch trackpad, Power4Gear only allows up to 150MHz overclocking
Conclusion: Outrageous style and outrageous speed define the Asus G51VX. Of course, so does outrageous impracticality, but as a gaming notebook, that’s hardly anything to be ashamed of (in fact, it’s pretty much par for the course). Fortunately, for a machine of such extremes, Asus has managed to keep price decidedly down to earth. Considering how far it outperforms last year’s model, $1,050 actually looks like an amazing bargain for this stellar game machine.
Pros: Excellent value; outstanding game performance; comfortable, full-size, backlit keyboard; unique style; quick boot times
Cons: Unusually weak speakers; low resolution screen; short battery life; heavy and bulky; so-so build quality
Excerpt: Buying a gaming laptop used to mean taking out a small mortgage, but as hardware has progressed it has become a lot less painful of a purchase. Today you can get a good gaming laptop for under $1500 and, depending on your needs, you probably won’t even have to compromise very much.
Summary: For $1,049, the ASUS G51Vx-RX05 is a very good laptop for gamers who don't want to sell their blood in order to spill some blowing away zombies. Its frame rates may not be as high as those produced by the Gateway P-7807u FX, but the G51Vx costs about $350 less, and its premium design is more appealing. While we prefer the Gateway for its greater horsepower, ASUS' budget-friendly rig will leave you with more cash to spend on the latest titles.
