Acer Aspire TimelineX 1830T (68U118)
3 November 2010
Summary: With its refresh of the TimelineX series, Acer has created another compelling ultraportable. The 1830T's fast performance and long battery life make the notebook an excellent companion for students and business users who are always on the go. If you can live with the smallish keyboard and the somewhat steep price, this Acer may have your name on it.
Pros: Strong performance, Textured lid resists fingerprints, 6 hours of battery life, Lots of storage space for 11-inch notebook
Cons: Small touchpad, A little pricey, Mediocre webcam
Conclusion: With the Core i5-520UM , the manufacturer, Acer, puts computing power into the 11.6 incher , Aspire TimelineX 1830T, which was only known from expensive subnotebooks with Core 2 Duo SL/SP processors until now. These high-performance ULV subnotebooks are only available in the expensive business division. An absolute novelty in the price range of less than 1000 euro is the 11.6 inch test device's performance.
Pros: Low weight of 1.36 kg, Good performance, Good battery life, Low power consumption, Low system noise, SPDIF-out, Good subnotebook performance in a small size at an attractive price. There aren't any similarly strong 11.6 inchers for less than 800 euro.
Cons: Display not AR coated, Treble-prone sound, Good input devices and an AR coated display would have made the consumer 1830T to an inexpensive alternative in comparison to pro-subnotebooks, like the HP EliteBook 2540p (1500 euro).
Summary: With the TimelineX 1830T, Acer continues its line of powerful and small ultraportables. This machine looks good and offers excellent performance and nearly 6 hours of endurance. However, $699 is nothing to sneeze at. Those on a budget will likely prefer the $599 Core i3 version of the TimelineX (1830T-3505).
Pros: Strong performance, Good graphics, Comfortable keyboard, HDMI output
Cons: A little pricey, Mediocre webcam, Small touchpad
Conclusion: The Acer TimelineX 1830T is our top pick among subnotebooks. It doesn't compromise power or battery life and it has a good set of ports that outnumber the competition. We're impressed with the specs on the 1830T, and they beat out the competition in features vs. price. It significantly outperforms Acer's own Ferrari One , has a faster CPU and more features than Lenovo's IdeaPad U160, a faster CPU and more ports than the MacBook Air (though it lacks the Air's dedicated...
Pros: Extremely portable yet powerful, excellent battery life., A very fast 11.6" notebook, one of the fastest currently on the market. Attractive, light and fairly thin. Very good battery life, runs cool, quiet fan. Plenty of ports including HDMI. Large capacity hard drive is standard on the Core i5 and i7 models. Has both WiFi 802.11n and Bluetooth 3.0, though no integrated mobile broadband.
Cons: Not cheap, tiny trackpad., Acer's flat keyboard may not suit those who favor island style keyboards, trackpad is small and it's easy to wander off its edges.
