Not so hot

Mr Peter, Amazon
18 October 2013
  • Summary: All the outputs are on the back. Awkward. When you tip it forward to plug something in, the damn power button on the FRONT turns the laptop off. Brilliant. And, good luck finding the power button. The DVD is also hard to find. Other than that, it works fine.

Died within 5 minutes of switching on.

  • Summary: The new laptop corrupted its boot loader and disk within 5 minutes of switching on (before installing anything) - everything on the disk was totally lost and it would not boot. Needed the laptop immediately so re-installed Win8 from scratch and am now happy with the laptop. Amazon could not offer a replacement - just offered a refund - not very good!

Decent internal spec low user interface spec.

  • Summary: I bought this laptop knowing about the average screen and keyboard but the problem is the trackpad. It spoils the whole laptop, one minute it is unresponsive the next it is over responsive and the pointer would jump about the screen. After exchanging it for a replacement the second laptop proved to have the same problem. I could have lived with the low brightness TN screen and average keyboard but having to use a mouse was a step too far for me, I use laptop on my lap!

Good stats but many problems with the laptop.

  • Summary: The laptop runs things quite well, however there are several design flaws and also it slows down very quickly despite weekly virus scans and HD cleans. The computer also comes with a LOT of unnecessary programmes installed that take a while to remove. Another problem, the keyboard on this computer very quickly deteriorates, the way that the keys are installed means that individual keys stop working, the o key is sticky and the 8 key doesn't work so i have to use the...

Great for the Average User. HOWEVER....

  • Summary: Essentially, this is a great laptop - a fast processor and dedicated graphics for a very reasonable price. Furthermore, though I've read some complaints about the screen, I found it to be perfectly adequate in resolution, and the touch worked perfectly. However... - Construction wise, there are some flaws.

Not a great laptop and hate Windows 8

cmklein, Amazon
24 July 2013
  • Summary: I think this would be a better laptop if it was running Windows 7 but still not great. It is impossible to have a comfortable session with it, without programs and Windows popping up all over the place that you didn't ask for. I think it is to do with the combination of a touch screen and the touchpad. If your hand or finger is anywhere near the touchpad, it just does it's own thing, very volatile.

cant shut down

Nigel, Amazon
25 March 2013
  • Summary: had this laptop for a month and for the second time I am unable to shut it down ( except for manually holding the power button in, then on re-start it shuts down straight away. I had to do a factory re set and lost everything on the hard drive in the process. calls to Acer technical support cost 10 P PER MINUTE ( an outrage) after the second problem asked for a replacement.

Upgradeable

Adrian, Amazon
9 February 2013
  • Summary: Just a note that when installing Linux, the screen appears black, but it's just that Linux doesn't set the LCD backlight up properly for some Acer laptops, so everytime I start it up, I have to use the keyboard to increase the brightness. Also, despite what the Acer tech support Website says, it is possible to upgrade the mSATA SSD and install the OS to it.

With 6GB of RAM and a battery life of 5 hours, it's a good choice for a casual user.

  • Excerpt: Historically, very few Ultrabooks have been good for gaming. Held back by the aging Intel graphics, not many can run Battlefield 3 at all, let alone without lag and at decent framerates. The Timeline could change that. The 15 inch chassis isn't quite as well built as the similarly sized MacBook Pro, but it's quite a bit lighter and over £1,000 cheaper, so it shouldn't hurt your wallet too much.

User Review

Lewis Standing, Cnet.co.uk
14 June 2012
  • Summary: there's a £727 version going with a 128Gb ssd (from save on laptops.co.uk, some reviews have highlighted over heating issues and throttling of CPU's and disbaling the turboboost feature when optimus is off (ie. dedicated chip(640m) in use). though highly tempting the poor screen and the fact that if it did have a full hd the 640m wouldn't keep up tipped the scales for me.
  • Pros: usable graphics and portability
  • Cons: small ssd's and poor heat sinks
