The Razer Tarantula only has backlights for the 5 macro keys on each side. But with the Battledock, a BattleLight accessory (available separately) can be plugged in to provide illumination for the keyboard. The Battledock can also be used with Razer’s BattleEye webcam accessory.
The Hyperesponse feature allows for quick response times while the anti-ghosting feature keeps the keyboard from freezing when up to 10 keys are pressed simultaneously.
The 32 kilobytes of onboard memory featuring Razer Synapse technology allows for storing custom profiles for each game. Using the keyboard’s driver, users can define up to 100 different profiles and store 5 of them on the keyboard itself.
The Razer Tarantula’s programmable keys include 5 gaming hot keys on each side as well as customizable media keys. The gaming hot keys can be programmed for a maximum of eight key presses and users can also define delays in the keystrokes. The media keys can be programmed to control the user’s media player of choice.
The keyboard ships with 10 custom blue key caps which have images printed on them. The images (a pistol, a grenade, a helmet, ammo etc.) are mostly for FPS games.

On paper the Razer Tarantula is an excellent keyboard which has everything that a high end product should. From application specific function buttons to extra USB ports and audio connectors the product really does not leave anything out. In addition, the ability to change keys and program the board to almost any level is excellent, we also like that the firmware can be updated to add features and fix any minor bugs which occur, although the update process could do with... The Razer Tarantula Gaming Keyboard is sleek and fast with some impressive features. Creating macros and profiles were a snap, and the SYNAPSE onboard memory is a handy feature if you shuttle the keyboard between different PCs on a regular basis. After working and playing on the Tarantula for awhile, I find that I prefer it hands-down over the Microsoft Reclusa for the short-travel keys and snappier tactile feedback. There are no benchmarks similar in functionality to... Read more
The Tarantula is a great keyboard, no doubt. It’s comfortable, sturdy and has useful extras. But it’s a minor let down, and at $100 USD it’s a bit overpriced. We liked the ergonomics, the extra features and the general feel of the keys and the palm rest, but were put off by the difficult software installation, lack of backlighting and somewhat high price tag. • Comfortable ergonomics • Useful extra buttons • Lots of customization potential Read more
Even with some minor dislikes about the software for the keyboard it would still be hard not to suggest it to a potential buyer. Like any product it always gets better with time and suggestion from its users. I think once they get a few more options fixed in the control panel and maybe add few it will be a much better gaming keyboard. As a standard keyboard I have no problems, I have pushed aside my long time keyboard and it has become my daily keyboard. Part of... Read more
Razer Tarantula passed all of out tests and showed perfect result for a keyboard. The only negative side is that its price is approximately 100 dollars, which is pretty steep for a keyboard. A great feature which this keyboard offers is the ability to add the Razer Battlelight for a better gaming experience. It costs approximatelly 20 dollars. So, if you're a hardcore gamer with a 100 dollars to spare ... go to the nearest Razer store and buy the Razer Tarantula... Read more
Let me start off with the bad, as it's an important note to make. On a fresh build, just installed the keyboard, windows refused to boot. checked the overclock, reset everything to stock, nothing helped. Unplugged the keyboard, since I noticed the Razer logo was dimmer than usual, and it booted fine. Plugged it back in after boot and everything has been ok, with the occasional BSOD in Vista x64, and the inability to boot. Newer drivers may have fixed this, but in my... Read more
When I got my keyboard one of the keys didn't work, but I have now fixed the keyboard. I have a background in computers and hardware trouble shooting. I opened the keyboard up and found a drip of lead solder on the sensor for the problem key, I scrapped the solder off and now it works 100%. If anyone has a problem with a non working key this maybe the problem, but I wouldn't recommend opening it up if you don't know what you are doing. this was a case of poor... Read more
