The keyboard is wired and connects via a USB port but does not have a built-in USB hub.
The Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 has a curved design which the manufacturer calls the “gull wing.” The gull wing design has a 14 degree upward curve for a more natural open-angle hand position while bringing the keys closer to the fingers. It has a built-in palm rest which is padded and made from faux leather. The keyboard features a 12 degree split and comes with a removable attachment that raises the front of the keyboard. When attached, the palm lift gives a 7 degree downward slope meant to improve wrist and hand positions.
The Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 has a zoom slider in the area between the split keys. The palm rest also features dedicated back and forward buttons and LED lights for status indications.
The keyboard also features enhanced F keys which can be toggled via the F key lock and customized using the included software. It also has dedicated keys for Internet, Email, Search, Calculator and Multimedia controls. In addition to the programmable F keys, the keyboard also has five customizable keys labeled “My Favorites”.
The Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. It comes with Microsoft’s IntelliPro software for configuration of the programmable keys.

Microsoft’s Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 is an excellent keyboard for both the office and LAN party environments. While it cannot beat the gaming keyboards in terms of features aimed towards gaming, the raised front definitely makes it more comfortable than most keyboards on the market. If comfort is your primary concern and you don’t mind having an ergonomic keyboard, then I would definitely recommend the Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Maximum CPU gives The... Read more
This keyboard was definitely designed around ergonomic ideals. Microsoft has taken a well-tested split "Natural" keyboard design and ergonomically improved it even more for the heavy user in mind. In addition to the ergonomic improvements, Microsoft has updated the style and design to give a more sleek/tech feel, all while still including additional functionality such as the zoom wheel and improved numeric keypad without wasting space on the keyboard. Including Microsoft... Read more
Finding the perfect keyboard can be tricky, especially if you prefer the split “ergo” design to the traditional style—as the options for the former have become increasingly limited in recent years. Fortunately, we’ve long been able to count on Microsoft’s Natural Keyboard Pro, finding its combination of split design, traditional key layout, and integrated USB 1.0 ports superior to all others. Now it seems Microsoft’s Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 could... Read more
Keyboards don't get any better than this -- at least not with currently available technology. The Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 is quiet, comfortable, and overall a joy to work with. Highly recommended to anyone interested in a more comfortable computing experience. If you're trying to decide between this keyboard and one of Microsoft's Comfort Curve designs, the Natural Ergonomic 4000 is superior in every way. However, if you've never used a "split" keyboard... As noted above, there's a wide selection of "extra" keys, and a zoom slider in the center between the two banks of keys. If you run an operating system other than Windows, though, don't be surprised if you can't get your OS to detect them. On the other hand, if you can get them working, the bucky-key capabilities are nearly endless. The black-and-grey color scheme is tasteful; no longer will you have to endure an ugly beige slab on your desk. Read more
The wrist rest & adjustability of height & angle for typing make it very comfortable to use. I particularly like the larger size of the center key row - makes locating the home row faster & easier when typing in the dark (so as not to disturb baby's sleep). I love all the short cuts on it too! Read more
Another thing to consider is the fact that the keyboard is rather large and takes up a bit of desk space. I've ordered a stand to hide it under, so hopefully that will help. However, this is pretty standard with ergonomic keyboards. I'm willing the sacrifice the space for not having any discomfort. Overall, Microsoft did well with this keyboard, but it could be a bit more responsive to the touch. Read more
