Great until it isn't any more

  • Excerpt: This kettle worked just fine for three years. This morning, while I was boiling water, I smelled something burning and noticed what seemed like heavy steam coming out of the pot. I turned it off, unplugged the base and opened the lid, and smoke? steam? billowed out. I looked at the base and noticed the plastic was slightly misshapen - short story is that it appears the unit was overheating at the contact points and, perhaps, inside near the coil.
  • Pros: Adequate boil time Good capacity Fits in crowded counter space
  • Cons: Safety concerns!

Not Durable. Danger of Boiling Dry and Staying On

  • Summary: Not the best choice due to safety issue and poor durability. Too bad, because the design is very good. Spend a little more and get one that will last.
  • Pros: Nice handle. Easy, safe pouring. Lid locks nicely, opens wide. Tall, uses little space.
  • Cons: Not durable. Major safety concern - boiling dry. On light too dim. Could be faster.

Great Kettle!

  • Excerpt: Having drunk a lot of tea in Europe, I decided on getting an electric kettle while here in the U.S. I just received this Proctor Silex 1.7L kettle. I was a little skeptical because it is competing with the likes of Braun and T-Fal. But, I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. It will boil 1.7L of water in about 8 minutes. I thought that was a little long, but I attribute it to the 110 volt system here versus the 220 volt system in Europe.
  • Pros: Cordless design, easy access for cleaning, wide opening spout
  • Cons: Average boil time (8 minutes for 1.7L)
