Summary: Great sound from this little speaker, but battery can't take a charge so the unit I bought cannot be used as a portable, as its designed. It took me 3 days to figure this out. If you go online and search for the Phillips DS8550 and battery problems, you will find out that quite a few people seem to have had the same issue. I returned the item - Thanks Amazon for making the return easy.
Summary: I sent the original back as the internal battery didn't charge so it always had to be plugged in. Item was replaced very quickly but the replacement has the same fault. Fine if portability isn't required, useless if you want to move it around the house. If portability is important avoid this one.
Summary: I bought this device for my holidays - it was great. Great sounds, great battery life etc... Now 6 months ownership with infrequent use, and it won't turn on. Just hangs then dies. Going to call Philips in the morning to get it swapped out. Such a shame.
Summary: A lovely speaker sound and looks great - the actually connection point to dock the ipad feels quite flimsy but with care it all worked and everything was going fine until we realised that the ipad 2 was not charging when docked in the unit. I have since read other reviewers saying the same thing and so contacted Philips who say "There is actually nothing wrong with your docking system from what you describe.

Summary: I have now had two of these Philips Fidelio DS8550/10, the second of which is about to be returned for a refund (apparently you are not allowed a replacement for an item that has already been replaced)... The first unit would power on the iPad or iPhone without warning and play music at the loudest volume!!
