good product

William E. Gifford, Amazon
28 May 2013
  • Summary: Instructions lacked instructions. Included manual tells you to go on-line which is great if you have a computer that is up and running. The drive itself is fine though built years ago therefore no factory warranty.

Do not buy for PS3 has delays

Corville A., Newegg
27 February 2011
  • Summary: Avoid for PS3 get one of the other drives that has good storage but not this problem.
  • Pros: Good storage, works fine and installs in PS3.
  • Cons: Has a slight delay on every read from the PS3 in a game, if that read occurs 15-20 seconds later. In Madden NFL, on every snap of the ball, there is a 1-2 second delay where the game freezes. This will happen in all games that are disc I/O intensive and loads different data sets.

Parked an issue for SSD/laptop owners

Anonymous, Newegg
17 January 2011
  • Summary: Just be careful if you're buying this as a secondary drive. The power management feature is quite annoying and especially tough/impossible to fix if your BIOS is really limited as was my case (HP dv6-3134nr).
  • Pros: Lots of space for the money As primary drive, its pretty standard fare
  • Cons: As others have highlighted, the extremely low time for inactivity/parking is really annoying. This affects more folks who swap out their main drive with SSD and use this drive as secondary as I did. Buyer beware if you're buying this for a secondary drive. As primary drive though, it ran fine for...

NOT the best for PS3

Peter S., Newegg
2 January 2011
  • Summary: this drive def has a slight delay when used in the PS3 slim. i upgraded from a 500gb wd drive that worked flawless. once this drive was all installed it would have a good 1 sec delay on the first time say when trying to go forward one chapter on a dvd movie.
  • Pros: great price @ $49 shipped (black friday 2010)
  • Cons: annoying slight delay on PS3 system....it will work fine. but when your used to a drive that responds instantly, this one can be a little annoying at times

Failed after seven months

Griffin C., Newegg
1 January 2011
  • Summary: I still need to get a replacement from Western Digital. What a nuisance... *sigh*
  • Pros: Was working great in my laptop for seven months...
  • Cons: ...then it started having errors on bootup (Windows 7 64-bit). I ran the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic, and everything checked out OK. Then it eventually failed outright.

Bad power management

Imran A., Newegg
2 December 2010
  • Summary: Its possible to fix it. Search google for program called WDIDLE3 1.5. It only works in DOS mode. You can set the spin down time to max 5 minute with this command: wdidle3 /s300 This dramatically improves performance. As the drive doesn't spin down every other second.
  • Pros: Large Size only paid $49 on black friday
  • Cons: Really extreme power management. The drive will spin does after 4 secs of inactivity. The drive is rated 600,000 load cycle. Lots of drives are failing because with 4 sec spin down they wear out fast.

1 of 4 drives purchased failed 1 week under a year

B. R. Whitty "Technophile", Amazon
8 November 2010
  • Summary: I purchased 4 of these drives almost a year ago (it will be a year to the day next week) to fill out a Synology DS409slim NAS appliance. I know these are consumer grade laptop drives (the NAS can't accommodate the thicker server class 2.5" drives), so I was expecting a drive failure to happen any...

Works in MacBook Pro, with help.

Kevin R., Newegg
11 September 2010
  • Summary: Some computers don't exhibit the behavior I was seeing, so YMMV.
  • Pros: Fast, big storage for laptop drive.
  • Cons: Had some power issues in a 2009 MacBook Pro 13". Had to run HADPM to disable spin down. Once I did that I was very happy. It was spinning down constantly beforehand, and I would get a spinning beachball all the time. I could hear it in a quiet room spinning down and up. SMART check showed it was ...

WD 640GB

Eric R., Newegg
8 July 2010
  • Pros: I read plenty of reviews before purchasing this drive; good price, quick delivery, and no real problems yet.
  • Cons: This drive parks too often, if I stop working for moment, the drive parks immediately and there is a lag before it resumes, very annoying. Should have believe the few reviews that highlighted this flaw.
