Click of death

Summary: I got this Western Digital drive a couple of years ago. The drive worked okay for about a month, then the SMART info became garbled. I RMA'd the drive and got a replacement. All has been good until a couple of days ago, when it started exhibiting the click of death. 450gb of files gone forever. I am glad for the people who are having a good experience with this drive, but be afraid, very afraid and back up your data.
Summary: Mine was supplied by ADMI. It was dead on arrival and they have not even acknowledged the return let alone given a refund or replacement. The manufacture date on the drive was over 3 YEARS ago. Hard drives should never spend 3 years on a shelf.
Summary: Bought mine in May 2009, used as a time machine back up drive, worked fine until today when it suddenly 'died'. Tried various tests, replaced drive to test bay and tried drive in external enclosure, wont even show up. Disk utility and Disk Warrior failed to even see it, very worrying - sudden loss of all backup. Lucky it wasn't my main drive I guess...
Summary: Western Digital Caviar Blue 640GB SATAII 16MB Cache 3.5 inch Internal Hard Drive OEM I have a SATA I/II compatible ASUS b'board, but unfortunately this drive steadfastly refused to make itself known to the m'board when plugged in. I updated the BIOS and related SATA drivers that came with the board, and also tried a change of cables but no joy. The drive would power up but in either 'native' or 'IDE' SATA modes the drive would not be recognised.
Undvik!!!
