Unreliable

Dan W., Newegg
10 September 2011
  • Pros: cheap
  • Cons: Drive failed after 3 months. I received a replacement from WD, and it failed one year later. This is not my first run in with bad WD drives. I have Maxtor and Seagate drives that have been working for the last 8 years. Stick with a brand other than WD.

BAD SECTORS ON ARRIVAL RMA

ROBERT S., Newegg
14 June 2011
  • Summary: WILL SEE IF WD RMA PROCESS IS AS PAINLESS AS I HOPE, AND HOPEFULLY THE REPLACEMENT IS NOT DEFECTIVE. TOO.. I KNOW THESE THINGS HAPPEN ESPECIALLY WITH MECHANICAL DRIVES, BUT I THOUGHT I SHOULD HAVE STAYED AWAY FROM WD...
  • Pros: WD RMA PROCESS SEEMS TO BE VERY EASY AND STRAIGHT FORWARD.
  • Cons: DID A WINDOWS PERFORMANCE TEST ON THE DRIVE THE FIRST HOUR IT WAS USED AND THE COMPUTER SHUT DOWN AND WHEN REBOOT COULD NOT LOAD WINDOWS, COULD NOT FORMAT, FOUND BAD SECTORS ALL OVER THE DISK... BASICALLY A BAD DRIVE ON ARRIVAL...

Worked for a while, then disintegrated...

D. Goad, Amazon
4 February 2009
  • Summary: I had this drive installed in a desktop until a couple of weeks ago when I suddenly got a drive read error. Pulled the drive and it sounds like it's full of sand. Platter self-destructed spectacularly with no warning. It's under warranty, but I wonder what the next drive will do.

Click of death

Ben Caldwell, Amazon
22 January 2009
  • Summary: I got this Western Digital drive a couple of years ago. The drive worked okay for about a month, then the SMART info became garbled. I RMA'd the drive and got a replacement. All has been good until a couple of days ago, when it started exhibiting the click of death. 450gb of files gone forever.
