Dead in Two Years

Charles S., Newegg
14 November 2012
  • Summary: This is my second WD Scorpio Black drive to fail within the warranty period. WD is pretty good about their RMAs, but it'd be better if it would just last a few years without flaking out. One more year and I would have replaced the entire computer anyway...
  • Pros: 5 year warranty, high performance (at the time of purchase)
  • Cons: Died without warning. >(

Purchased 3 in Jan 2011, all failed

Timothy W., Newegg
12 October 2012
  • Summary: I don't know if I received a defective batch or what, but every single drive I purchased eventually failed, most recently yesterday. The others failed after 7 months and 14 months. They were RMA'd and so far none of those have failed.
  • Pros: high performance, inexpensive, 5 year warranty
  • Cons: failure prone

Poor Track Record for me

Jonathan K., Newegg
30 August 2011
  • Summary: Used to have good luck with Western Digital, but it really seems that they have let their products go down hill. Likely going to have to try a different brand if it doesn't work in my other system.
  • Pros: Great price for the size
  • Cons: First one I got was DOA and I RMA'd it. Second one I received has not even had more then a few hours worth of run time and my laptop is saying that through the SMART drive system is notifying it that it is likely to fail soon. Have tried installing Windows 7 Ultimate on it twice, the first time i...

DOA

Patterson D., Newegg
3 May 2011
  • Pros: It didn't start a fire.
  • Cons: DOA...drive never even spun just clicked. I added 1 egg as second drive after RMA hassle appears to be running fine. I should have stuck with Samsung drives as they have not sent me an $80.00 piece of garbage. Do they test a drive before sending or just let the customers do that?

Starting Clicking

Brian H., Newegg
29 April 2011
  • Summary: It seems like there are always a certain number of drives that are always lemons from the get to, regardless of manufacturer.
  • Pros: Nice drive, until it starting clicking
  • Cons: Started clicking while idle after only two days of use, RMA for replacement

User Review

James S., Newegg
16 April 2011
  • Summary: Always keep your data backed up! I got lucky this time and didn't lose too much important stuff since I ran a backup a couple days prior to the failure.
  • Pros: Quick, pretty quiet, worked well for a few weeks. RMA process was quick and easy.
  • Cons: Failed after three weeks. Used it on my Thinkpad T61 which was used every day. Out of the three WD drives I've purchased brand new, this is the second to have failed within a month of purchase. I'm now a little nervous about them.

DOA

Keith H., Newegg
8 April 2011
  • Summary: Time to RMA :(
  • Pros: Great price for the size and speed.
  • Cons: Drive was not quite DOA, it survived one boot sequence. After its second boot the computer no longer saw it nor did the BIOS.
