WD5000AAKS End Of Life

Clare S., Newegg
30 November 2014
  • Summary: For being a good cheap all-day-long quiet and stable drive, I'd normally give 5 eggs. However, I feel it has gone bad too young. So, 4 eggs.
  • Pros: Has not given a bit of trouble since 02/2011. In my case, I can't hear it, so it's been doing its job silently. Price was reasonable and speed is OK.
  • Cons: By today's standards, it's big (3.5"). It's finally coming up in the SMART test with warnings of impending doom. Seems a bit of a short lifespan for a nicely treated drive. I have a high quality power supply (with 2 external layers of surge & EMI/RFI protection), a thermally stable and protected ...

5 years... not bad

Sheena P., Newegg
19 March 2013
  • Pros: Bought and installed as a boot drive in April 08. This week it started dying. Almost made it 5 years, not bad.
  • Cons: Only has a 3 year warranty. I was hoping for 5. (Didn't WD offer 5 back in the day?)

And now out of stock

Anonymous, Newegg
20 November 2012
  • Summary: This drive sets in an external enclosure. It is partitioned. Works well for me, but has not had a lot of hours of use.
  • Pros: I have had good luck with WD hard drives.
  • Cons: Ouch... I paid nearly $100 for this drive. I guess prices were high because of the flood.

good drive

Andrew Z., Newegg
8 October 2012
  • Pros: Bought two, both still work almost two years later.
  • Cons: MoBo messed up the RAID set-up, luckily it was RAID 1 so didn't have to re-install. Both drives still work on their own, but put them in RAID and the MoBo doesn't see them...
