Alive one day, dead the next

Evan J., Newegg
2 January 2013
  • Summary: Moved away from the other major hard drive brand that sounds like oceanmate. Had nothing but problems with their drives. Still have a stack of dead ones. I have had good luck with WD Black drives. Thought I would try the Blue drives.
  • Pros: Worked fine for 1 1/5 years. Then the problems began.
  • Cons: The Win7 Ent build started having problems with Outlook and Word locking up. Thought it was the software. No software fixes worked. Decided to uninstall / reinstall Office. Would not uninstall. Did an easy transfer of user profile and data. Started Win 7 reinstall, fresh install. Install succeede...

Lasted 4 years

Keith A. Lewis, Amazon
11 August 2012
  • Summary: I used this drive for 4 years. Then suddenly it failed completely. I had to install a new drive and restore my data from backup. WD claims these drives have a 1,000,000 hour MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) -- Don't believe it!

Horrible Warranty

Rocky T., Newegg
10 August 2009
  • Summary: Would buy wd again just will back up stuff this time, and buy the extended warranty.
  • Pros: I had this drive for about 1.5 years, and it worked great, until about a month ago.
  • Cons: Started giving me windows system errors about a month ago. I'd have to install the missing system files before my drive would boot properly. Then it just couldn't read my second partition at all. Plus the warranty sucks, only 1 year? I think 5 years should be standard on all hd's.

Replaced 4 of 4 < 1 year

Salitpa "or is it Satilpa", Amazon
30 December 2007
  • Summary: WD replaced first with WD5000AAKS, second replacement, WD5000KS.. Be sure to register your drives with WD when you get them. One remaining drive (not replacement) making recurrent sound of winding down but no obvious performance problems.

I'm sure they are OK but my need was special.

Alvin S. Hunter, Amazon
11 April 2007
  • Summary: They advertised WD5000AAKS but they sent WD5000AAKX. I needed the ....AAKS for a WD Mybook World Edition backup drive which will not recognize any other drive. Booo!! Big waste of time.
