Great drive, but packed by an idiot

D. Kelley, Amazon
10 September 2011
  • Summary: Bought yet another pair of these for general backup use (we like this drive a lot - as a drive it is great) and as noted by others, this is just a naked OEM drive. But this time the two drives arrived in a huge 2 foot long box with a light bit of packing and, having been tossed about in shipping, the anti static envelopes are covered with dimple marks from the impacts of the rough handling.

Worked perfect on my imac g5

OC Skin, Amazon
1 July 2011
  • Summary: I ordered this to upgrade my imac G5 160GB stock hard drive. I wasn't sure if it would be compatible as a replacement for the Caviar but it is. The SATA plugs fit just fine. I would recommend this if you are looking for an upgrade to your existing western digital drive.

"if it seems too good to be true..."

mo01gte, CNET

  • Pros: value per capacity, it is a cheap drive for the capacity since it came out and still keeps that adavantage
  • Cons: once you use it a while you'll start to notice a degradation in access speed, then it starts increasing it's operating temperature, and finally it starts failing. after a while failures become a regular thing of the day and you'll start to reboot more an

Good reliable and quiet drive

Kchiu88, Amazon
5 February 2011
  • Summary: I bought 2 of these drives to replace my 4 years old drives. They seem to be faster and a lot quieter than the old drives. The performance seems much better too. They came with a decent generic package with proper protection. they came bare ( no jumper or SATA data/power cable).

Needs more packaging

S. Pawar, Amazon
1 October 2010
  • Summary: I just got this so i cant say anything about it's durability. I did format it and install windows and it works fine. But the packaging is keeping this from a 5 star item. Box wasnt taped up, and only thing keeping it from shaking in the box is a few cardboard like grooves. I was concerned it might be broken. Hopefully it doesnt brake down on me like other reviewers say.

great drive for the price

karan singh, Amazon
11 September 2010
  • Summary: This drive is a bang for the buck! I just plugged it into my computer and the motherboard detected it immedately.Install Windows 7 on this hardrive was a breeze.I would reccommend this drive to everyone. *hint* This is an oem drive,so be expected to not get a included sata cable and screws. The other thing that i didnt like about was how my hardrive was packed.Their was one airbag in their in a cardboard box, but it worked fine.

Loeax, Amazon
29 July 2010
  • Summary: If you get a "Hardware Initiate Failed!" comment with this HDD, your computer is only SATA 1.0 compatible and you must jumper pins 5 and 6 to revert the HDD to 1.0(second pair of pins from the SATA connector). Since this is an 'OEM' item devoid of instructions and the like, I had no way to know this and thought it was DOA. So, I ordered a replacement. When the second one also came DOA, I knew it couldn't be the HDD's.

Noiser than CPU fans

Shaoxuan Zhang "Shaoxuan Zhang", Amazon
25 September 2008
  • Summary: The performance is OK. It's hot. Its vibration is too much and cause the whole case to resonant vibrate. That makes lots of noise, bigger than all fans in my case.
