Summary: Download Data Lifeguard tools for your particular WD drive. If you've seen a HDD go south enough times then it will save you some grief thinking it is other components. Yes, WD was gracious in sending out a replacement even though I must pay shipping on the RMA'd unit.
Pros: WD has a great reputation. It was built on performance. Their drives have been bullet-proof over the years. I use them almost exclusively.
Cons: I have had three drives fail in the past three years. The last one was just RMA'd. It had been up for 8 weeks. I feel the quality of WD drives is sliding from what their reputation dictates.
Summary: I initially bought one of these for a quiet PC. Because it was quiet and I never had problems with my WD 80GB Caviar I bought another. Big mistake. The first one died after a few months. The second one died a month later.
Summary: When the second drive did work. I tried coping a little over 200 gigs to it. I set it copying yesterday at 6pm and at 9am this morning it was still less then half done?!?!?!!! What the heck! I have 2 WD 500Gb JB's that are MUCH faster and have been running for years without ANY problems!
Pros: I thought that it being a 16mb buffer and such it would be better and faster. Not so!!!
Cons: Just got my order yesterday. Ordered 2 of these WD Blue 500GB's and first one opened DOA! Second one the Motherboard will only see it half the time. Had to give it more time to boot up before MOBO would see it (like it was a MUCH older drive). WD Diag Tools wouldn't even recognize it! Diag tools ...
Summary: Don't buy this particular WD drive. Since I purchased I see that there are a lot of reviews showing up with experiences similar to mine. WD will get a pass from me on this one but if it happens to another line I will be searching for another brand of first choice.
Pros: Good price, western digital is normally a very reliable brand.
