It Happens

Gary F., Newegg
1 June 2011
  • Summary: Download Data Lifeguard tools for your particular WD drive. If you've seen a HDD go south enough times then it will save you some grief thinking it is other components. Yes, WD was gracious in sending out a replacement even though I must pay shipping on the RMA'd unit.
  • Pros: WD has a great reputation. It was built on performance. Their drives have been bullet-proof over the years. I use them almost exclusively.
  • Cons: I have had three drives fail in the past three years. The last one was just RMA'd. It had been up for 8 weeks. I feel the quality of WD drives is sliding from what their reputation dictates.

Worst drives I've ever bought

A. Smith, Amazon
25 December 2010
  • Summary: I initially bought one of these for a quiet PC. Because it was quiet and I never had problems with my WD 80GB Caviar I bought another. Big mistake. The first one died after a few months. The second one died a month later.

Failed!

David J. Atkinson "David", Amazon
5 December 2010
  • Summary: I have to agree with the first reviewer - this is the worst drive I have had in terms of reliability. It failed after only a few months of operation. Luckily, it was part of a mirrored RAID set and the other drive is still functioning perfectly. Recommend you avoid this drive.

This drive sucks. I am so surprised

Jered M. Stoehr "Jered S.", Amazon
16 November 2010
  • Summary: I read these reviews and my jaw dropped; I couldn't believe people were having the same problem with this drive. I was so happy when I picked it up; a top name drive for under $100 500gig SATA, not even a month later it crashed. Not worth the deal, I see the price has gone down since I bought it...

Bad Drives

Andrew V., Newegg
7 October 2010
  • Summary: When the second drive did work. I tried coping a little over 200 gigs to it. I set it copying yesterday at 6pm and at 9am this morning it was still less then half done?!?!?!!! What the heck! I have 2 WD 500Gb JB's that are MUCH faster and have been running for years without ANY problems!
  • Pros: I thought that it being a 16mb buffer and such it would be better and faster. Not so!!!
  • Cons: Just got my order yesterday. Ordered 2 of these WD Blue 500GB's and first one opened DOA! Second one the Motherboard will only see it half the time. Had to give it more time to boot up before MOBO would see it (like it was a MUCH older drive). WD Diag Tools wouldn't even recognize it! Diag tools ...

Failed in two months

Anonymous, Newegg
29 April 2010
  • Summary: I was quoted a price of $1100 to have my data recovered. I am usually very fastidious about backups, but this is crazy.
  • Pros: It had a pretty good capacity for storage.
  • Cons: It died two months after I installed it.

Not detected as primary drive

Gregory P., Newegg
24 April 2010
  • Summary: Never usually have problems with WD drives. Hope the 2nd works as expected.
  • Pros: NewEgg's on the ball with RMA's. Never had a problem replacing a defective part.
  • Cons: The drive is not detected as a primary drive by the bios. Only detected when used as a slave. Read forums of other people with the exact same problem with 2 out of 3 drives.
