By no means new

Paul Pomes, rakuten
26 November 2013
  • Summary: On startup the SMART report stated 1800+ power on hours with 22 power cycles. This is *not* a new drive despite the headline. The firmware is also a revision behind what my other used drives from EBay state. Overall the drive is satisfactory despite the deceptive headline.

Received Disks with Multiple Model Numbers (one of them is being illegally resold)

  • Summary: UPDATE: Even beyond the problems listed below, I did not realize that these are only Sata II drives. Yes, shame on me for not reading the fine print (the information was NOT in the title when I purchased these), but who in the *%&$# is still selling Sata II drives these days?!

1 out of 2 dead

Brian S., Newegg
1 January 2013
  • Summary: Will have to state that this is my first DOA from Newegg out of many years and many drives.... luck of the draw I guess. But there is no execuse for the drive to not be under WD 5 year support. Will be working with NewEgg support to resolve.
  • Pros: Do not know, got 2 to create a RAID 1 set, cant do that with ony one drive
  • Cons: 50% dead rate and when registering the good drive at western digital site, it said No Limited Warranty - Product was originally sold to a system manufacturer. Please contact the system manufacturer or the place of purchase for warranty service. " Need to get this correct for 5 year warranty to be...

7 of 8 good

Stephen H., Newegg
22 August 2012
  • Summary: When doing something like a high-speed RAID rebuild, temps get up to ~47 in an iStarUSA D410??10SA case with the Hot-swap fans on low, so mine aren't running partciularly hot. Paying RMA shipping on a 5-year warranty return is insulting to all of us.
  • Pros: The ones that work are working well. I was able to do a set of drive replacements in a 92%+ full RAID 5 array in ~5 hours, which is somewhere near 106 MB/s average R or W speed. After one failure, I rotated each of 4 drives out of and back into the RAID 5 array, doing an extended WD DLG test alon...
  • Cons: One drive died within a month, but not identified till outside of 30-day RMA window. At first the problem was obscured by a less-than-useless Rosewill RC-218 causing BSODs. Then it was hidden because I didn't use the entire drive right away so the bad sectors didn't show their ugly faces. But a W...

Annoyed

Anonymous, Newegg
23 June 2011
  • Summary: After my second RMA on the 1.5TB, WD upgraded me to this drive.
  • Pros: Speeds are great, 120mb+ read avg. Quiet. Looks nice?
  • Cons: After the computer has been asleep for a while( more that a few minutes ), the drive is missing when it wakes up. Have to restart the system to get the drive back.

1 of 2 pretty bad

Terry B., Newegg
25 December 2010
  • Pros: Have several of these running on a nas and have been pretty reliable so far, about 6 months.
  • Cons: 1 of 2 drives ordered came DOA. A little high on price. Crazy in that I've ordered 2 different drives from NE in 2 orders and both orders had 1 DOA drive. What are the chances of that?? May try it again to see if I can get a third order with a bad drive.

Correction on Warranty

Boris K., Newegg
14 December 2010
  • Pros: This is a correction to my post below. After having another reconditioned replacement sent by WD go bad I called WD and got the following information that may help. The RMA replacements are "reconditioned" and in my experience most likely not very thoroughly checked by WD. In my experience all th...
  • Cons: Bad quality control on HDs that should be the top priority for WD being Raid Edition and Enterprise grade.

User Review

Scott S., Newegg
20 July 2010
  • Summary: I was hoping I would get lucky and not experience the same problems some of the other reviewers had. I made decide to go raid 6 since these drives are proving to be unreliable...
  • Pros: 2 TB of space.
  • Cons: Ordered 6 drives. 1 of them had smart failures during the creation of a raid 5 array.

Mixed picture

hilwhi, Amazon
7 January 2011
  • Summary: I bought four of the Western Digital RE4 2 Tb drives. Delivered quickly despite it being near Christmas. Three worked, one was dead on arrival. Amazon replaced very quickly. Sadly the replacement was dead on arrival too. Again Amazon replaced very quickly with a drive which works.
