Drive will not initialize. Full of bad sectors. It's just a big magnet!
17 January 2016
Summary: I've probably installed at least 20 hard drives in the past 5 years. So when I put it into my computer, it said "Disk Unknown, Not Initialized" which is not uncommon. When I tried to initialize it, I got "Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)". This was using the virtual disk manager.
Summary: I am disappointed in Newegg. I bought a warranty thinking that if the drives go bad, they would be replaced. The way it looks to me is that if the drive does not fail, the warranty company makes a profit. If it fails, you just get your money back. They win either way.
Pros: Cheap - But apparently you get what you pay for.
Cons: This is the second of three drives from the same order (09/11/15) that is being returned. The first one was sent back to Newegg (I purchased a warranty, but buying the warranty was useless as they just gave me my money back instead of replacing the bad drive). This one is being sent to Western Di...
Summary: I purchased a pair of these HDDs to replace failing RAID disks used in a dedicated firewall server. The actual capacity needed was no more than 20GB so that I hoped I would save some tens of bucks by choosing these instead of unnecessarily large (300GB and up) consumer packaged HDDs.
Cons: I purchased 3 of these last year to upgrade some older Dells. 2 of them installed fine, although 1 of the computers runs slow with it installed. 3rd came DOA, WD sent a replacement but it too was DOA (both of them bad boot sectors). WD was too difficult to work with so so I just surrendered and p...
Summary: Somebody at WD messed up, because they sent me the 320GB version of this drive after the whole warranty debacle had cleared, I'm glad though, I didn't really want the original back, I would have settled for a smaller one honestly.
Pros: A learning experience I suppose, about being more thorough.
Cons: This HDD gave me more trouble than I can fit into 3,000 characters, but here's a summary. Was apparently bad from day one, but always managed to throw me off by taking a fresh OS install with no issues. I therefore, several times figured that it was other components (my suspicion was the GPU) cau...
Summary: I would stay away from western digital HD for a while. I don't think they are having good runs at the factory or something because this is 2 within a week of ordering is not a good sign.
Cons: Normally I don't have a problem with Western Digital drives but I must have gotten a bad rash of them. The 2 drives that I ordered both had the same issue they would spool up and sound like the drive was scratched. I tried a different known good drive in the same computer hooked up the same way b...
