I seem to get the bad ones?

Terry R., Newegg
14 June 2015
  • Summary: On the other hand, the "Black" and "Red" WD series drives I purchase never break down on me.
  • Pros: Every single one of these "Green" WD drives I have purchased in the past have failed on me prematurely (within 2 years). I see many other reviewers reporting 3, 4, even 5 years from these things. Ugh, is it just my luck?
  • Cons: Don't last long enough.

Good value for the cost, but only lasted 4 years

Stephen G., Newegg
26 July 2013
  • Summary: Seems like HDs just don't last like they used to. I remember older HDDs used to last forever, but now it seems like it is the most common thing to fail.
  • Pros: Was a great buy when I bought this drive 4 years ago at $70.00. It has run in my desktop since it was installed to replace another failed WD drive. I use it for storage, not the boot drive.
  • Cons: Only lasted 4 years and now is not recognized at all but still spins. not bad for a spindle HDD, but I've seen other drives last longer.

Lasted 3.5 years of lite use

Eric H., Newegg
19 November 2012
  • Summary: I have other WD drives that refuse to give up, despite heavy DVR usage. You just never know...
  • Pros: Thought I would submit this just to have it on record... The drive made it through the warranty years with no problems. Like some others, it dies not long after.
  • Cons: Given the relatively light use (mostly unused in the first year, then nightly cron backups later on), hoped it would last longer.

Nice while it works!

Anonymous, Newegg
19 April 2011
  • Summary: I noticed because I was unable to read a specific part of a system backup made with this drive. I have bought many WD hard drives before (some of which I had to submit warranty claims).
  • Pros: While it worked, it was great. Quick considering the "green" aspect to it. Quiet and stays pretty cool.
  • Cons: Drive appears to be going down. 1300+ bad sectors and counting.

User Review

Melody S., Newegg
6 April 2011
  • Summary: Disk continues to do some "power saving" feature, and will shut itself down after a few minutes of file transfers, causing either the whole system to hang, or just a 5 or so minute wait time until it bursts another chunk of data.
  • Pros: Cheap disk with ample storage. Newegg gave me a great deal when I needed another disk to move some stuff to on short notice.
  • Cons: See other thoughts. I have no 100% cons about the drive at this time, but that might change after some future testing. At this time all I can say for sure is I would not buy another one for use as an external e-sata drive.

slow

Lance P., Newegg
18 February 2011
  • Pros: Cheap and has a lot of space! .... it's lasted a year+!!
  • Cons: This drive is very slow, I have to wait hours just to transfers 10GB. This drive is also very noisy. It sounds like a bunch of metal scraping around in a cement mixer when it's scanning for files. VERY ANNOYING.

Bad Sectors After Three Months

Steven S., Newegg
13 January 2011
  • Summary: I bought two of these 2GB Caviar Green drives about three months ago. No complaints until one of them started throwing bad-sector errors (wouldn't you know it was the one I'm using for my system drive).
  • Pros: Quiet, low power consumption
  • Cons: One out of two failed within 4 months

Drive failed after a few months, replaced quickly by WD

Anonymous, Newegg
20 November 2010
  • Summary: Can speak too highly about WD Warranty Replacement program. Very easy to use and efficient. Can get an Advanced Replacement with the use of Credit Card for security until you send back failed drive. I only buy WD now.
  • Pros: First 1TB Drive purchased in Feb 2009, failed in June 2009. Since this was my first 1TB, I had backed up all my data before placing on this drive. I ran this drive at about 80% capacity since the purchase. Failed in June, contacted WD and was replaced with a new drive quickly which has been in us...
  • Cons: Drive failed, but gave me ample warning before permanent failure.

first one DOA, other two no problems for 18mosos

Anonymous, Newegg
9 October 2010
  • Pros: very quiet, low power
  • Cons: The first one I received was DOA. The replacement and another I bought later have been running 18mos 24/7 with no issues (on a NAS box - low usage)
