Quality missing

Brent Y., Newegg
23 December 2014
  • Summary: I still have WD drives from 15 years ago running solid in a few linux boxes I own. It seems WD quality has gone down the drain as of late. Having drives fail within five years of normal use is not acceptable to me. I think I will steer away from WD from now on.
  • Pros: Decent speed for the price.
  • Cons: Failing after only two years. This drive was purchased two years ago to replace a Blue WD drive that failed after five years of use.

WD HDDs prematures failure(s)

Greg V., Newegg
15 December 2014
  • Summary: Purchased one on 6/14/2012 from newegg for a new build, died 12/10/2014 with little use, only used 2 to 3 hours daily. 12/10/2014 computer became extremely slow, then pausing for about 15 seconds at a time with the HDD light constantly on. Ran WD diagnostics and it failed miserably.
  • Pros: These drives run reasonably fast when they work.
  • Cons: Recived shortly after ordering.

Making crunching sounds after 9 months...

Patrick M., Newegg
30 August 2014
  • Summary: I bought this hard drive in December 2013 and now it's making crunching sounds less than a year later. It's being used as a data drive, so it should have held up better than my Seagate drive I'm using as a system drive.
  • Pros: It's a fast hard drive.
  • Cons: It started making crunching sounds in only 9 months.

Look elsewhere

Tim G., Newegg
25 July 2014
  • Summary: If I had to do it all over again, I would look elsewhere as to WD. The RMA process for both Newegg and WD was pretty simple and straight forward. To go through 3 bad drives to find 2 good ones seems like the quality control isn't there.
  • Pros: When they are working, they seem to be all they're hyped up to be. RMA process is very good, although I wouldn't expect to have to use it on new drives.
  • Cons: Where do I start.... Ordered 2 of these for a new desktop build and set one drive up as a clone of the other. These were to be used purely as file storage. Right out of the box 1 drive was good and the other had SMART errors. RMA'd the bad drive to Newegg and got the replacement within a week. Fa...

  • Summary: I've never Once until Now had a Problem with Newegg they've been Awesome and All powerful in my book. Well Now i don't know what is causing them to Brick hard drives maybe i just Have Really bad Luck. SO i'll Give them Two Eggs.
  • Pros: Can't Think of Any right now... Okay i thought of one. The one out of 6 Drives Isn't a Brick and is still running on my PC!

Worked well when it worked

Andrew L., Newegg
18 April 2014
  • Summary: Not familiar with WD or Newegg warranties. First drive for a first build, wouldn't give up on WD just yet.
  • Pros: This worked really well when it did work. I had no issues with this drive for a little under a year.
  • Cons: I'm not very technically savvy, but I think the drive is dying. I've identified bad sectors on it, and most programs on it won't run. Based on what I've read, I thought this would last a few years at the very least before having issues (if any).

Functioned for 3 months

Lionel D., Newegg
9 April 2014
  • Summary: WD is generally reliable. This hasn't happened very often in over 15 years building computers.
  • Pros: Fast transfer rates, quiet performance
  • Cons: Suddenly failed, as hard drives sometimes do.

Disappointed but hopeful!

Robert B., Newegg
28 February 2014
  • Summary: I bought this at xmas 2013 along with some other pieces towards a first gaming rig for my 14 year old son. We finally managed to get all the parts together and completed the hardware build on 2-27-14. On 2-28-14 we planned to finish up but fell short with the HDD failure.
  • Pros: Great bang for the buck when I purchased at xmas on sale. Easy install. Not an SSD but good for a first time budget build.
  • Cons: Drive failed during Windows 7 installation portion of gaming rig build. Initial hardware checks were fine until loading the operating system. After 3 failed attempts to load windows and some troubleshooting it came down to the hard drive. Over the course of a few hours the MB would not POST witho...

Surprised that my 3TB is lasting longer than this 1TB WD

Falisha B., Newegg
5 February 2014
  • Summary: I've always preferred WD products. I have an external 1.5tb drive that has been reliable for 3+ years, surprisingly. I also have 500g passport that has been great for about 6 months as well. WD makes great drives, and I'm happy with what I've purchased from them.
  • Pros: Definitely the price. I got mine around Newegg's black november bonanza, so I was really excited to get a coveted WD Black HDD for a great deal. Easy install, worked for the short amount of time I had it, not too loud - at least among my chassis fans and the like, and quicker than most drives. Wa...
  • Cons: Dead after a surprisingly short SHORT time. I cannot believe that I was mistaken in worrying about my 3tb monster than this puny - supposedly reliable, give the size and label - 1tb wd. Didn't last more than 2 months. Bad sectors all over the place, a 30+ hour disc-check, write/read errors every ...

False Advertising. This drive is OEM/Bare

rakuten
11 June 2013
  • Summary: Ad does not indicate the item is an OEM (Bare Drive). The packaging was barely adequate. I have not had a chance to verify the drive operation. NOT HAPPY
