Surprisingly fast!

Cal H., Newegg
  • Pros: Purchased 8 of these as a secondary tablespace array for a postgres database server. (The primary being 8 Dell enterprise SSDs) Installed on a Dell R720 with a PERC H710 card, bonnie++ reports 917MB/s seq writes, 1207MB/s reads! That's actually slower than my SSD array's sequencial rate of 843MB/s write, 979MB/s read. But as expected, the random seek latency is about 38ms with these drives, compared to 10ms with SSDs. Also, WD warranty is awesome, I always buy WD for ...
  • Cons: My observed seek latency of 38ms is significantly slower than I expected. It's also very difficult to find the average seek time of these drives in WD's official specs. So far I only found a mention of 3.6ms on a UK website, but I'm not sure I believe that. (See other thoughts)

Very good drive but noisy.

Benoit P., Newegg
  • Summary: The second things and the major IMHO, this is noisy as hell. It always make strong noises, even I'm in the next room I hear this hard drive scratching.
  • Pros: Access time, transfer rate and everything is fast. I got between 150-215mb/sec depending were the data is on the platter. I was thinking of an SSD, I'm happy with the velociraptor, there is much more capacity. There is a reliabilty we almost can't find in other brands.
  • Cons: I found this drive a bit pricy, because there is a huge price step between wd black and velociraptor of the same size. The performance step between both drive isn't that big, so you paid for reliabilty but it's not all justified.

Bigger than most 2.5 drives

TigerDirect.com
15 February 2014
  • Summary: Beware this item is much larger than a normal 2.5 drive so if you have a small space to fit it in this unit would not be the right choice

Great Drive but needs 12 volts!

Andy U., Newegg

  • Pros: Fast, small
  • Cons: 12 volts required. Most laptops and "optical Drive bays" only provide 5 volts.

no heatsink - designed for servers

Duane D., Newegg
29 May 2013
  • Pros: only way to get SAS-like performance in a low-end server with Intel or other host-RAID controller that only supports SATA. Also, consumes less power than a comparable SAS drive.
  • Cons: costs more than the model with heatsink kit? I'm guessing this has to do with expected warranty claims as these bare drives are likely to be subjected to heavier use and potentially not cooled as well.

Fast and cool

Sean S., Newegg
22 March 2013
  • Pros: So far it boots a lot faster than my WD Caviar Black 1Tb. It runs at 34* C when writing and reading my installations after boots. Runs 34-37* when playing games. Solid construction. Cool looking. It runs as loud as the Caviar Black 1Tb.
  • Cons: None so far.

Another Correction

Scott G., Newegg
14 March 2013
  • Pros: -Extremely fast
  • Cons: -Does not come with the WD Icepack Heat-sink Mounting Kit, so it will most likely require a mounting bracket, but the advertisement clearly states this: "BARE DRIVE"

REALLY FAST

christian h., Newegg
12 January 2013
  • Pros: my boot time is around 10 seconds with this drive(i havent actually timed it but its however long it takes to walk 10 feet). i run windows 8. no overclocking. i dont know how this manages to boot faster then any SSD boot time im reading but it manages. im not arguing.
  • Cons: i can no longer have a good reason to get a SSD after buying this hard drive
