I dropped my laptop from a desk, and the hardware broke...

Summary: I've had my Lenovo ideapad for just a year now, and although I admit it has slipped off the bed and onto a thinly carpeted floor, for the most part it has not sustained any major drops/damage. The other day a desk top broke in class and my laptop slid off and landed on the floor - a reasonably hard fall, but the repercussions were ridiculous. All my programs began crashing, and when I attempted to run a disk check, it wouldn't finish and then refused to boot at all.
Summary: I ordered a used Dell Studio 1737 laptop from a reputable distributor. I was excited that it had a 500gb hard drive, the biggest laptop drive I've ever owned. One month after receiving the computer, I got the blue screen of death. I ran diagnostics and found that the hard drive was bad. I pulled it out and discovered it was this Seagate model. I've since heard that Seagate is known for being unreliable.
