3 of 3 dead after 18 months

Matthew E., Newegg
7 January 2015
  • Pros: No long term pros
  • Cons: One drive died in 12 months, one drive at 16months, and one drive at 18months. I have gotten one replacement via warranty and am sending in the other two, but I will not be buying Seagate Surveillance drives again. 3 of 3 drives failing is not acceptable.

Not Reliable

Nicholas W., Newegg
4 October 2014
  • Summary: I'm going to let the facts speak for themselves. I purchased 8 3TB drives from Newegg in September of 2012 for use in a RAID-6 array. I was looking for always-on functionality, and these fit the bill.
  • Pros: Fast. Did not arrive DOA.
  • Cons: Constant failures.

Fail

Robert M., Newegg
23 September 2014
  • Summary: I've contacted Seagate. We will see.
  • Pros: Performed as expected for 25 months. Sold as having 3yr warranty.
  • Cons: System hung during normal operation. Upon reboot drive failed during post and the horrible click of death could be heard. When I contacted Seagate about a warranty replacement I was informed the drive was out of warranty. Apparently it was manufactured when the policy was a 1 year warranty but wa...

Do NOT buy!

Moolah, Amazon
15 September 2014
  • Summary: Don't ever buy any Seagate hard drives. I had 4 fail on me in succession. Their drive quality has dropped over the years and are now no longer the brand that they used to be. All 4 failed drives are less than a year old. They all developed the click of death.

A dud - don't waste your hard earned money on these drives

Stan K., Newegg
6 June 2014
  • Pros: none
  • Cons: After purchasing 2 of these drives in February I've yet to receive even 1 that is actually works and is new. I've had the drives already replaced 3 times, with most of them being DOA. I wanted to set up a raid drive with mirror storage for my photos and video clips, and haven't been able to do an...

Unreliable Product

S F., Newegg
26 August 2013
  • Pros: "Enterprise" labeled drives for cheap
  • Cons: Not enterprise grade! I bought 3 of these and have replaced 1 of them twice, another is being RMAed again. Looks like the third one is failing now. I've owned them for about 2 years

The Reviews Do Not Lie

Eric M., Newegg
12 August 2013
  • Summary: I would not recommend buying these drives. I have found that they have a higher failure rate than the standard barracuda running 24x7
  • Pros: Drives were exactly what I needed, they worked well with the hardware RAID 5 I setup...
  • Cons: Then 3/18 failed, I was constantly replacing drives in the first two weeks of operation. Very disappointing, but at least they died earlier rather than later.

High failure rate

ANDREW L., Newegg
24 June 2013
  • Summary: Timing out requests was particularly troubling as Linux' MD layer is not that robust against it. The drives were used in a synology 12-bay box. Effective read speeds with the timing out drive in the NAS box were more than 100x slower than normal (normal degraded mode is 2-3x slower than normal).
  • Pros: Good price on sale.
  • Cons: Bought 3 drives to expand a storage server (raid-6) and had 2 fail within the first week. One drive did not respond completely or correctly to "IDENTIFY DEVICE" command, appearing with incomplete information and incorrect size. The second drive started timing out requests after a week of operatio...

Never buying seagate again.

Roger H., Newegg
10 June 2013
  • Summary: Never buying Seagate again...there is no way the other HD makers can actually be any worse...I have bought 8 disks (6-1.5TB/2-3TB) from Seagate in the last 3.5 years, 2 were immediate DOA's (and had to be RMA'ed), 4 additional of the 3 year old 6-1.5tb had to be RMA'ed before the 3 year warranty ran...
  • Pros: At least it failed immediately... And I at least put it in a test machine to test before putting it on my machine with live data...the way it died it probably would have crashed it by locking up the SATA bush.
  • Cons: Never even fully spun up...Seatools software short test failed immediately with an error.
