ST3000VN000 drive reports temperature lower than ambient?

Ira G., Newegg
  • Summary: Concerned that drives will not be useable after sitting on shelf until needed; repacked as received, but no desiccants in packaging. (8) units in Seagate NAS 440's are between 3 and 5 years old, so consuming replacements about every 3 months.
  • Pros: Bought five drives, no DOA when received unlike the desktop DM equivalents. Time will tell.
  • Cons: Have to test everything I get from Seagate ASAP upon receipt. Having two different running drives report 10 degrees less than ambient is disturbing. Probably means I will not get over-temperature warnings when they fail in the NAS. The other three reported approximately ambient even after running...

even worked as a stand alone drive

  • Excerpt: I hadn't noticed that it was a NAS drive before it arrived. I went ahead and installed it anyway. It took a couple tries to get my system to recognize it but once it did it worked like any other drive. Using it to store my original photos and as my Photoshop/Lightroom scratch drive

Exactly as expected

JASON M., Newegg
1 April 2016
  • Summary: Instead of shunning Seagate drives, I got some great deals shopping around, loaded up rig with 8ea 3tb and 2ea 5tb. Newegg packing is pretty good (4 of the drives from them) none DOA. I'm happy with the purchase. The noisiest thing in my PC are the fans, which aren't loud at all.
  • Pros: Seems to run cool pretty cool and quiet on my topmost drive slot. 31C at rest with ambient of 30C
  • Cons: None yet

NAS drive works so far without issue

Andrew N., Newegg
15 October 2015
  • Pros: Performance, capacity, power, heat, etc. are good at this price point. I have three of these in R5 now on an LSI card. Will add another for spare when the price comes down or a promo is offered. Went from R1 to R5 without issue though it took over 24 Hrs (data foot print dependent I know ;). Have...
  • Cons: none of the drives I have purchased thus far have the cool new label shown on NewEgg's product page LOL ;) Could have a longer 5-year warranty, three years is a bit lean.

Put four of these in QNAP NAS

David S., Newegg
2 September 2015
  • Summary: I sent the bad disk back to Newegg along with the Seagate utility report confirming the disk as defective. The return was no-hassle and I received the replacement drive about one week later.
  • Pros: Lower RPMs keep them cool in the NAS. Price was nice for a 3TB at the time I purchased them. Running 3 in a RAID 5 with a 4th drive as online spare.
  • Cons: One of three was defective right away; the NAS was OK with read/write but very slow and the SMART output was bad. Downloaded Seagate's disk utility and it confirmed the disk was bad.

Decent drives 1 DOA out of 17

Wesley W., Newegg
24 April 2015
  • Summary: The drives were bought for 2 x QNAP 869L. Luckily I bought 1 extra drive as a standby and as it turns out, 1 drive was DOA so it didn't delay the deployment. Newegg is replacing the defective drive.
  • Pros: Decent drives, seems to be quieter and generate less heat than the Baracuda 7200 RPM drives.
  • Cons: 1 out of 17 drives purchased was DOA.

  • Summary: Cable are such a waste of space in a shipping box. this must be why it had none comming with it.
  • Pros: I saved 5$ buying it here.
  • Cons: I have to spend 5$ buying either sata or ide cable to plug it in.

Time Will Tell

Kyle M., Newegg
15 February 2015
  • Summary: Only time and usage will tell for these drives. If they run as well as the 2TB version, going to be a great buy. I hope Seagate lives up to its good reputation.. Running RAID setup well, will be going to RAID 10 soon. Then I will see how it goes.
  • Pros: Picked up 2 of the 3TB drives for my NAS build. I have used the 2TB version for other builds. So far the drives seem to load and go right to work. They have good speed and are quite. They are running 24 hours for a few days, then only while the Storage system is needed. Needs flex so it puts them...
  • Cons: None as of yet .... Still testing.
