12 TB RAID 5 With Synology DS411

Joseph Rushing, Amazon
15 February 2014
  • Summary: I bought four of these to use in an n-1 redundancy scheme in a Synology NAS. Read/Write times are very good (Can't speak to the read speeds off the top of my head but writes top out at 40MBps (That's Bytes, not bits) over gigabit LAN. Had these for over a year and not one problem. Tip to anybody doing these, space out when you buy the hard disks, and perhaps get them from multiple suppliers and multiple brands. If I could do it again I would do this.

Seagate Constellation Drives are great for RAID use.

Joe, Amazon
15 February 2014
  • Summary: I have recently built four new computers with these drives. I have had ZERO problems with the drives and I love the 5 year warranty and the much longer rated life. I have four in one RAID5 setup, and six more in RAID1 mode. So far nothing but good service. A Note: Be SURE to check that the unit you are getting has the 5 year warranty. I think this only applies to USA sold/used units from real Seagate distributors.

Storite is selling Dell replacement drives without warranty!

Jeffrey Wong, Amazon
15 February 2014
  • Summary: Even though it's listed as "new" it doesn't come with the full Seagate-backed five-year warranty. The drive has a Dell sticker and Seagate's warranty lookup says it's an OEM "component" part. I returned it.

Enterprise Quality

Richard J. Ceci, Amazon
15 February 2014
  • Summary: When you put so much capacptiy on a drive, it MUST be ultra reliable. The sheer size of the drive makes backups etc a bit tough. This was a great price. I think the EA3 was mislabeled. It was really an ES2.

These rock with Synology DS1812+

Paul of Maine, Amazon
15 February 2014
  • Summary: Slid eight of these 3TB wonders into my new Synology DiskStation 8-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage - Black (DS1812+) and configured with 2-drive fault tolerance. Write speed is always in excess of 100 MB/sec and sometimes hits 123 MB/sec. These drives are expensive and worth every cent! Am also using the DS1812+ as iSCSI file storage for a VMware ESX server and it's performing very well.

as sold by Prince Technology LLC - no warranty

Alex Gerulaitis, Amazon
15 February 2014
  • Summary: I fell for it again: when the price ($175) is too good to be true - don't buy it. Yet as it is sold through Amazon, I was hoping for a miracle. Unfortunately, no miracles, not even on Amazon. The description said nothing about the warranty and I assumed these were legit US drives with manufacturer warranty. I also sent a message to the seller asking about the warranty. No response.

It is not quite

Seetharama Rao V. Durbha, Amazon
30 July 2013
  • Summary: Not sure about the drive performance, but one thing is for sure - this drive is noisy. It has that constant whirr noise that can become quite annoying - particularly as the previous one I had was super quite.
