Summary: Do your research before you buy. Be sure to check the 1-2 star reviews to look for common problems.
Pros: Comparable price and performance for it's time. very easy to use and install. No problems until it failed without warning.
Cons: Failed without warning after only a few years. Apparently this particular model is known to spontaneously fail thanks to a new platter coating Seagate started using with this model. It also has a higher failure rate than Western Digital and Hitachi combined.
Summary: Seagate has really got down hill years ago they warrantied there hard drives for 5 years and they would last 10+ the ones made in the last few years are warrantied for 2 years and last 2 years and 1 day. I have bought several like 8+ and all have gone bad just after the warranty expires.
Pros: It Works long enough for the warranty to expire
Cons: I have had over half the hard drives I bought from Seagate go bad just a few days after the warranty expired looks like there really good at making drives last just long enough.
Summary: Fortunately I had no data on the drive. It was just sitting there spinning and suffering a terrible slow death. If a drive could have cancer, this drive has a high risk rate. Just read the other 600 reviews. Seagate is cross shipping the replacement.
Pros: Seagate was nice enough to send me my 3rd drive even though I was out of warranty. Happy as a pig! Yeah but now the cons.......
Cons: Can you say "I'm having a drive nightmare?" Purchased first drive 08/31/09 with CC32 firmware; it died 12/17/11 so I got a little over 2 years on that drive. Seagate replaced it with a refurb with firmware CC34; that drive died today 8/2/13 so I got less than 2 yrs on that drive. So, even though ...
Summary: I used to think Seagate was good. I find that pretty much that with any manufacturer with a drive over 1TB, the reliability of the drive is iffy. I guess the technology isn't there yet. Don't want to buy an Enterprise class drive!
Pros: Quiet. Warranty is good.
Cons: Like everyone else, I've had nothing but bad experience with this drive. Bought 4 of them. 3 of them have been RMA'd, and I've had to RMA both the "re-certified" drives I got back after a month of use. Less than 10 hours use on the drive!
Summary: Need to swap this failing drive out. Have two in RAID1 in Synology DS212j with DSM 4.0 which shows an alert for disk problems. The HDD management summary reports status "normal" but when you zoom in on detailed "SMART info" it shows that one drive has Reallocated_Sector_Ct "failing now" and raw data...
Pros: At the time seemed like a good deal. Three year warranty, thank goodness.
Cons: After 7200 hours in use (300 days), one of two drives is reporting SMART failures of the sector reallocation kind. Glad it will be under warranty.
Summary: I will probably never buy from Seagate again as this is the 2nd bad drive that I've gotten from them in different capacities in different years. WD is the way to go, as they've stood by for years and have yet to totally fail me like this one did.
Pros: Lots of space. That's where it ends
Cons: I've had this drive since December 2010. It's the beginning of August 2011. The boot drive says it's bad ALREADY. I'm going to have to send it back to Seagate and wait for it to be replaced. Painful, as I had to copy all of the video from it to my backup only drive, and hope that it doesn't fail ...
Summary: i had a CC34 firmware that wouldnt update to the CC35 until i found the above code from someone also posting on this drive here. Now time to find some forums for people with the same problem cause seagate doesn't seem to want to work with their clients, they just said RMA it back.
Pros: if you get one of these drives be sure to download the ISO for firmware flash, and use these commands if it errors out and says Model match, firmware mismatch::: Ctrl+C then Y to create a command line break, then type in the following command to start the upgrade FDL486A -m Hepburn -f HECC358H.LO...
Summary: I was looking for a large HDD to store media files and bought this one because it was on sale. I hadn't used a Seagate HDD before so thought I'd take a chance. Unfortunately, this will probably be my last Seagate purchase as well.
