Seagate Barracuda LP 5900RPM Green SATA 3Gb/s 1TB Hard Drive ST31000520AS Review

reviewthetech.com
10 July 2011
  • Summary: I’m not sure I would use the Barracuda LP as my main hard drive as it’s a bit slow really. It might not be bad for an HTPC system but still the heat bothers me a bit for that kind of usage.  Right now I’m using a green drive in my computer for my automatic backups and that’s where I think this drive would fit perfectly. The drive does power down when not in use it seems and then power back up very quickly when needed.
  • Pros: +Green, low power drive, +Large capacity, +Can be SATA 6 gb/s, +Decent speeds
  • Cons: -Can get hot to the touch

Fastest 5900rpm drives

  • Summary: I assumed being 5900rpm drives they'd be slow - which was fine as I'm using it as backup - but they were just as fast as any of my 7200rpm drives. Would definetly recommend.

Fast

  • Summary: I have upgraded to this from Barracuda 7200.11 that I have used for storage. I was reluctant to go for the 5900 rpm drive as I though it would be a step backwards, but went for this as I is apparently faster than WD Green. Having benched the drive I was surprised it was actually faster than me previous 7200 rpm HDDs.

  • Summary: Great drive. Rapid delivery Folders open very quickly, noticed a huge improvement from previous drive 500gb Samsung F1. Using it as a media drive, plenty of space, fast response time. Runs very quiet.

  • Summary: Got this to replace my old Seagate 7200.12 1TB STEAM Games Hard drive as it was almost full. Bought the Green 2TB more for the size and price than any other reason but so glad I did now. Steam used to load in about 50 secs, now it loads up in under 30secs.. Game loads are noticeably quicker too as are loads between levels. Been buying Seagate drives for the last 15 years and never had a problem with them....
