Summary: Written from a distant historical perspective, of course. I'm not sure what I even used this drive for, but I am sure it was swapped out to a larger size as soon as the price of 500's fell, then again 1T. So, in any case, it was a decent enough drive, although I don't know why anyone would want one these days, apparently it is still offered here and at about the same price as a 1T.
Summary: Right off I will tell you I'm partial to WD Drives. I bought this for an old computer I was giving to my son. This drive worked for about 50 days then sounded squeaky. I bought this based upon price. I then bought a WD Drive to replace this drive. It wasn't worth sending it back to segate to me.
Summary: Functionally disk worked fine and was fast. I got it to clone my winXP disk which has three partitions. Though it recognized the partitions okay and copied everything correctly but the Windows did not boot up.
Summary: This drive works fine. However, when trying to install it as a second drive into a Mac G4 desktop it has 2 problems. 1) the cable provided does NOT work due to the fact that the plug that would have to connect to the Seagate as a second drive is on the WRONG SIDE OF THE RIBBON CABLE. Fortunately the ribbon cable supplied by Apple with the computer has a plug already available to plug into a second drive if you choose to use it.
Summary: Be aware that Seagate has disabled AAM (auto acoustic management) from the factory on all their drives due to a pending lawsuit for copyright infringement. AAM is part of the ATA specifications, however Seagate doesn't mention anywhere that their products are missing this important feature -- not on the retail box, not in their specs, not on their website.
Review of Segate 7200 Barrracuda 80GB Ultra ATA100 HD
Charles H. Henderson, Amazon
10 March 2006
Summary: I bought the Seagate as a replacement for another hard drive of the same make and model which I had bought back in September of 2005 for my RAID1 system from another vendor. The original Seagate came with a 5 year warranty (which is great), but I had expected much better service. The replacement that I obtained from Amazon.com is running fine - so far. The failed Seagate has been returned for a warranty replacment.
