Summary: This drive was marketed as "New". I now know why the price was low. This is a used drive. The ESD bag was open and the drive is already formatted as a primary with data already existing on it. Granted, I do not have the software to recover the data anyway but it was misrepresented as NEW.
Summary: Worked great for a long time. Then at the 3.5 year mark it completely bit the dust, couldn't mount or recover or even reformat (using Linux with ext4). Good thing the warranty was 3 years long :/ Now I'm out a 500GB drive and all my data, thanks Seagate. I'll try someone else's drives from now on.
Summary: Due to my own pigheadedness, I kept trying to prove that the drive couldn't possibly be bad and ended up using Seagate's RMA process rather than Newegg's. When the drive worked, it seemed decent enough.
Pros: Cheap, quiet, ran cool, 3 year warranty
Cons: Became sporadically unresponsive within two weeks of installation in a new computer. Finally caused random and frequent OS crashes, even though it was not the boot drive.
Cons: Died a slow death. The computer would freeze up periodically. At first not very often then it got worse. Tested the hard drive and it passed. So I thought it was something else wrong but shortly after it died. Lasted about 2 years. I guess I learned the lesson to back up data better. :/
Summary: Maybe if NewEgg back charged their suppliers instead of customers, they might improve their quality control.
Pros: At least one worked...
Cons: Ordered 2 drives, one drive worked but the second drive was making a loud clicking sound and BIOS/RAID would not recognize it. Waiting on Newegg to RMA. Nice how the customer has to eat the shipping in order to get a replacement.
Summary: Hoped for better. Used the other major brand for quite a while, then switched to Seagate. Looks like it's time to switch back for a while.
Pros: Price, quiet drive, decent speed, runs cool
Cons: Reliability. As in it's lacking. Purchased four, two died within a year. Pretty decent failure rate. I expected better, but now I'm wondering how long I've got before the other two pack it in. Warranty? Yeah, but box up, ship out, wait patiently, recieve a refurbished drive (doesn't exactly fill ...
