EHHHH

Matt B., Newegg
7 September 2015
  • Summary: Back up your storage drive?
  • Pros: 2tb for a good price
  • Cons: Bought 9/20/2011 as a secondary storage drive. Barely boot up the computer. Died 9/3/2015 while adding my music to iCloud library. The disk still spins up. Buying a replacement board to recover my data. Thing is that the replacement boards are $50.

Unfortunately, these are no longer the drives they once were.

Anthony Cofer, Amazon
22 December 2014
  • Summary: Item's a dud. My initial purchase of this HDD (Also a Samsung Spinpoint with the exact same label) worked absolutely perfectly, and 3 years of near nonstop use later as my main HDD, it works fine.

Two just died...

michael k., Newegg
22 July 2014
  • Pros: Low power, adequate performance, price, and size when bought
  • Cons: Like the title seaz- I bought two, and am retiring them both after 2 yrs. Of course, the warranty was for only ONE. Silly me. At least I had all data backed up elsewhere. No more cheeeep drives for me. These are great as door stoppers or toys for the kids to explore/destroy :)

Fine when I bought it - but has a firmware glitch that can be a killer - I think it has been discontinued

Merlin "Merlin (BPZ, MD)", Amazon
16 April 2014
  • Summary: A Firmware glitch can cause the drive to write bad blocks which will kill your data. There IS a patch - but no way to tell if the patch has been applied - because the patch does not update the reported firmware VERSION !!

died after 8 months

Thomas M., Newegg
16 April 2013
  • Summary: At least their RMA process is easy.
  • Pros: Bought 3, and they worked great in a RAID 6 Synology NAS (with a mix of WD Red/Green drives) while they lasted. Thank goodness for RAID...
  • Cons: 1 of the drives died out right (click of death) at the 8 month mark. The other 2 got smart errors within a few weeks and are also about to be replaced.

Great while it lasted

Andrew C., Newegg
1 February 2013
  • Summary: of course out of warranty so no hope there
  • Pros: 2 TB for 79.99 almost filled it up
  • Cons: died after 2 yrs - a few clicks and gone forever if this is your backup drive - back it up somewhere else too

Failed after 13 months

Robert M., Newegg
19 January 2013
  • Summary: unlikely to seek replacement under warrantee as I don't want to share personal data on drive with third parties
  • Pros: reasonably quiet, easy to install
  • Cons: failed after 13 months of casual use in desktop PC... clicks of death for a few hours and then gone

Started failing after 16 months

Anonymous, Newegg
28 November 2012
  • Summary: Thought it was important to post after 16 months of usage as durability here is important here for users as well.
  • Pros: First Samsung drive I ever bought Worked great for about 16 months never completely died Prior to 16 months of usage, I would have rated 5 eggs
  • Cons: Started failing after 16 months, with ultra slow reads/writes finally pulled and replaced with a Seagate no more Samsung drives for me

1 out of 2 ain't bad?

christopher s., Newegg
26 November 2012
  • Summary: I use my media drive much more than the gaming one so I would've expected that one to go first, but either way I was hoping to get at least 2 -3 years out of both.
  • Pros: 2 TB! They were a great price when I originally bought them 5/2011.
  • Cons: I bought 2 of these drives in May of 2011, and have been using them quite a bit. 1 drive is strictly for my media (TV recording, movie storage, pics, music, etc..) and the other drive was used strictly for games. The game drive failed on me just recently (out of the 1 year limited warranty period...

Good price for the size, but not very durable

Shane S., Newegg
23 November 2012
  • Summary: Considering I used to keep my computer on nearly 24/7 & and still do keep it on for a few days without shutting it off, I assume the drive just got overused. Running defrags & virus scans almost every night probably didn't help, either. I bought Samsung based on a suggestion from a friend.
  • Pros: Good capacity for the price when I bought it about a year ago.
  • Cons: Not the most reliable drive, not good for heavy users. I bought this drive a little over a year ago & decided to do a scandisk today when I was unable to defrag it after redownloading all my Steam games. Turned out that I had a bunch of bad sectors & this was keeping me from defragging it.
