5+ Years later

Richard B., Newegg
  • Summary: Would keep these going but they are 75% full so it is time for an upgrade to 6TB replacements. I hope the next drives are equally quiet and worry-free, but quicker. These have been nice drives.
  • Pros: Installed four drives in Synology DS410 NAS box in November 2010 and they have been running 24/7 ever since. So far, no problems and no worries. They are quiet and dependable. Always pass the weekly disk checks.
  • Cons: A bit slow (5400 rpm), so am replacing with 7500 speed drives.

User Review

Anonymous, Newegg
30 March 2016
  • Summary: Update: Nearly 5 years of daily use later and these things are still going strong. Using these in a Synology DiskStation. So far so good.
  • Pros: Ordered 2, surface scanned and set up in RAID 1 just fine. Wanted a 5,400rpm set for lower noise/heat/power draw for use in a NAS. I'll update if they end up failing prematurely, but so far they work as advertised.
  • Cons: None so far.

Very Good Drives If The Head Parking Issue Is Taken Care Of

DeRail, Amazon
24 January 2016
  • Summary: I have had a pair of these drives running in a Synology NAS for over four years. No issues since installed. These drives initially had a frequent head parking issue similar to the infamous problem with WD drives. However, the Synology software recognized the issue and dealt with it.

Poor quality drive

Daniel T., Newegg
10 November 2015
  • Summary: I did back up my most important files and pictures to DVD every few months so I can still get some of the data back.
  • Pros: Not any I can think of
  • Cons: Lasted a little over 3 years, used only as a data backup drive and only turned on when backing up once a week otherwise it stayed off. Crashed so bad none of the data could be restored.

Bad drive

Robert S., Newegg
6 October 2015
  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Bought this drive in 2011 and saved the for a rainy day. Installed it in my computer after my Toshiba 3 TB died after just over 3 years. Worked for days trying to initialize the drive no luck took it to my computer guy and he confirmed it was dead. Called Samsung, out of warranty. This was a new ...

  • Summary: Back up your storage drive?
  • Pros: 2tb for a good price
  • Cons: Bought 9/20/2011 as a secondary storage drive. Barely boot up the computer. Died 9/3/2015 while adding my music to iCloud library. The disk still spins up. Buying a replacement board to recover my data. Thing is that the replacement boards are $50.

Short lifespan

Christian T., Newegg
22 August 2015
  • Summary: Will go back to the expert in the HD field, and will run RAID 1 from now on.
  • Pros: For the price, the memory was cheap. Performance wise is it comparable to WD and Seagate and Maxtor.
  • Cons: Bought 5/10/2011, Today 8/22/2015 the drive crapped out on me. I did not run this 24/7, or abuse it. A 4 year lifespan is okay but honestly I have WDs and Seagates going longer than 10 years.
