Good drives but....
7 November 2012
Summary: Apart from a bug which caused early units to suddenly forget that they were 2TB drives, the F4s and their predecessors have been great. One telling point is that they shipped with a 3 year warranty.
I note that the new Seagate units from OC have a mere year's warranty - and they still cost way more than I paid over two years ago. Have you seen Seagate's profits reports?
There are better bargains to be had at the time of writing.
Summary: Already had one of these for a good while. Samsung's my go-to brand for hard drives; my 1TB HD103SJ has been ticking over both as a storage and OS hard drive flawlessly for about 18 months now.
Like others have pointed out, this is (oddly, since Samsung are often the OEM for everything from HDDs to monitors) a SeaGate drive. And as with most "eco" drives, it spends a lot of time idle.
Summary: Samsung made some awesome drives, this isn't one of them, really it's not, because its not a Samsung drive, it's a Seagate. If you don't believe me copy and paste the serial number starting ST2 into Google. Seagate bought Samsung last year, sold their main manufactering factory, and has since been slapping Samsung labels on their old Baracuda 2 TB drives to boost sales. More than a bit underhanded if you ask me.
Summary: I have 8 of these drives in a Fractal Design R3 case, connected up to an LSI Megaraid controller and they do exactly what it says on the tin.
They are fast enough, big capacity and I leave them running continuously 24 hours a day for about a year and none failed so far.
Summary: No problems so far so alls good.
I must say, I know its "green" and isnt as fast as some of the 7200rpm models but if you think about it, your paying £60 per TB. All the other 1TB hard drives are no way near that..
Summary: Got 6 so far - prices were quite a bit better when I bought them, so I would probably not do it now - I'm glad I spent the money when I did. They have been sitting in two Qnap NAS systems which have been on constantly for at least 9 months.
Summary: Bought 2 to replace some worn-out storage drives. Excellent in this role, quiet and streams large files quickly. Not as good value now as a couple of months ago apparently as prices have doubled :((
Summary: Very pleased with this drive. Using it for data storage with an SSD as my main drive. Extremely quiet. It replaced an old Samsung F1 drive which was so loud in comparison that it was driving me nuts. Go ahead and stick these on Today or This Week Only so I can justify buying some more.
