Better performance and transition than expected

John B., Newegg
16 May 2014
  • Summary: You can get two of these and build a RAID0 -- or use even more drives for the same approach. But it's not so worth doing for several reasons. With chipsets and BIOS updates of Z68 and later, you have Windows TRIM support for a standalone SSD under RAID, and possibly for multi-disk RAID configurations, but in the latter case -- only with BIOS and IRST-software updates.
  • Pros: There are several makes, models and sizes of SSDs to choose from, and the prices have dropped to make it a feasible choice over HDD boot drives and ISRT configurations of an HDD and small SSD. The "enthusiast community" has been touting the Samsung models at least since the arrival of the 830 models a few years ago.
  • Cons: At this time, I'm going to drop my rating by one Egg, which is really quite lenient. Even if you register the product and create an account at the Samsung web-site, the e-mail link for tech-support doesn't work. You cannot submit questions. Others have noted getting a run-around with phone support.

Fast drive, issues with installation

GFisher, Adorama

  • Excerpt: Like the performance of the drive. Getting it installed came with challenges. System was running RAID1, broke the raid set, made the system drive non-RAID before cloning, but the clone still was not good and resulted in a large number of Windows stop errors. After many attempts at fixes, finally did a fresh Windows install and all seems to be better. Would recommend doing a fresh Windows install in the first place with a RAID system.
  • Pros: Fast, Lightweight
  • Cons: support time limited

Cutting-edge perks and problems...

  • Excerpt: I purchased the drive to install it on my new Haswell rig, with the intel BOXDZ87KLT75K motherboard. Once everything was setup, the drive works like a charm. Comparatively, the drive is a little pricier and marginally better then some of it's competition, but at this point, you should expect to pay significantly more the hardware that gives you the extra inch that puts it in first place. I use the drive currently for digital drawing, 3D character modeling and gaming.
  • Pros: Fast, Quiet
  • Cons: Difficult To Install, Requires Update Out Of Bx

  • Summary: I have been on the SSD wagon for a while now and I wanted a fast and large SSD. The Samsung 840 Pro is according to reviews the fastest consumer SSD in the market right now. While I cannot attest a significant increase in performance over my former Intel 520 240GB, I do enjoy the larger capacity. I intend to keep this as my main storage unit for a few years.
  • Pros: - Super fast (even for a SSD), - Large Capacity (for a SSD), - 5 year warranty
  • Cons: - Expensive

  • Excerpt: Used as boot and data drive RIG = ASUS P8Z68-VPro w/2700k CPU, 16G. Like the speed, have a Alien laptop with non-Pro and access is noticeably faster. Need to tweak new install settings but base install is decent.
  • Pros: Easy To Install, Fast, Highly Compatible, Quiet

  • Excerpt: I'm a Macbook Pro poweruser with Pro Tools 10. Very cool which is from low power usage. Only negative is it is slower on start up than my old 256 OWC mercury extreme Pro 6g. Running applications it's very fast.
  • Pros: Easy To Install, Fast, Highly Compatible, Quiet, Reliable
  • Cons: Slower Boot Up Than Owc

  • Summary: Recently bought the Samsung 840 Pro series SSD for my MBP and I couldn't be more satisfied with it. This SSD is really speedy, with read/write rates consistently between 490-520 mb/s - in fact, I think it's one of the fastest SSDs available today. T...
