Summary: Built my system in July 2007. Bought 4 and used 3 of these drives (one on the shelf pending inevitable failure) in a RAID-5 configuration giving me about a 1TB fault tolerant data drive. Today - 6 Mos after the warranty expired, ONE of the drives failed. Installed the backup (from the shelf) and the data drive is currently rebuilding itself (fingers crossed). System used about 4-6 Hr per day (sometimes more) over the past 3 years - nothing too extreme.
Summary: I just wanted to add my positive experience with this hard drive. This drive came with my HP Pavilion Slimline, which is a small enclosure so the computer itself gets rather hot. The hard drive hasn't had a single problem. Of course, I backup the contents to an external drive just to be safe. It is quiet, fast, and HUGE.
Summary: Transferred all my critical data to this drive as backup when replacing main drive. Trashed all the data on the original main drive. Installed a nice new 1TB main drive and started to transfer data back from Samsung and the considerate little so and so just sat there clicking away with mechanical failure. Checked the samsung site and it is still under warranty. They will replace the drive but not recover the data.
Summary: This drive died on me today after living at majority of its life (1 year) alone in an ATX "project" case. After only 124 power cycles, at least 20 of which occurred just today, this drive already has 103 bad sectors. Avoid.
Summary: This hard drive failed in 11 months. Initially I got warnings from S.M.A.R.T. that the hard drive is failing. In a few days, the hard drive started making loud grinding noises and the OS would hang after some time. I used this as a data drive (didn't install any OS on it). After reboots, the drive would work for a minute or so and the loud noise would start again. Samsung just replaced the drive with the same model. I hope it works a bit longer !!
Summary: I know lots of people have given a bad review about this HD. Well i doubt it, I've had it for 4 years now and havent had a problem with it. I dont believe it's even noisy, in fact you can barely hear it. In my opinion it a very good HD and very spacious.
Summary: This drive was included in my HP Pavalion M9457c. It worked perfectly for 120 days then had a hard failure. HP's warranty expired at 90 days. It was the primary drive. I was able to retrieve most of the files but couldn't boot the system nor access the original system image files. I'm disappointed in Samsung quality.
