OCZ Synapse Cache 64GB Solid State Drive
3 April 2012
Excerpt: In our past SSD articles, we've focused a great deal on SSDs targeting the high end enthusiast market. It's no doubt that they're speed demons, but as we all know, in the computer hardware market you pay premiums for things like higher capacity and top end performance.
Conclusion: Final Thoughts: OCZ has really hit the mark with their Synapse Series SSDs. Instead of having to choose between the performance of an SSD and the capacity of a traditional hard drive, this innovative caching solution gives users the best of both worlds.
Pros: Provides SSD-level performance without sacrificing capacity, Includes NVELO's Dataplex cache software, SATA 6Gb/s interface, Supports TRIM, SMART and NCQ, Includes a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter bracket, Easy to install, 3 year warranty, Reasonably priced
Cons: Dataplex software only works with Windows 7, Does not support hard drives larger than 2TB (yet), Not as fast when reading and writing randomly generated data
Summary: Final Thoughts
You know I honestly was a little skeptical about these supposed caching drives. I mean I knew what they were supposed to do but I did not expect to see such a performance increase. I mean using the hybrid solution is just like using a normal solid state drive really.
Pros: – Near solid state drive performance, – Improves Windows 7 boot time, – Easy to setup software, – 3 year warranty
Cons: – Dataplex software can only be used on Windows 7 systems
Conclusion: Whether you have skipped through all the benchmark pages and went straight for this paragraph, or you have read through our entire review in detail, it does not matter -- I am going to throw out everything for a moment, and tell you how the OCZ Synapse 64GB feels. And honestly -- it feels amazing.
Summary: OCZ's Synapse Cache solid state drives work quite well at offering a relatively important performance increase to non-Z68 motherboards. Users will see quicker program load and execution thanks to its fast caching feature.
Pros: Compatible with any system, Improves overall system performance, Saves from having to rebuild or install a fresh OS, Don't have to build a new Z68 system, Very easy to install and setup, Good SATA3 transfer rates
Cons: More expensive than regular non-cache SSDs, Check the OS RAID fix if you have setup issues
Summary: OCZ's Synapse Caching SSD is truly an impressive product. It enables you to get near-SSD performance from a hard disk, of any size, multiple TBs are no problem. Installation of the software is easy and can be completed even by novice users.
Pros: Huge performance improvement, Relatively cheap way to get SSD-like performance for a big harddrive, Simple software setup, no tweaks required, SATA 6 Gbps support, Supports TRIM, 3 year warranty, Nice looking, rugged metal case, 3.5" adapter included
Cons: Dataplex only works on primary HDD, High price, considering this a 60 GB SSD, No support for Linux/MacOS, No tweakable parameters
Summary: Where I was a tiny bit skeptical about the RevoDrive Hybrid I seem to enjoy this solution all the better.
So here's a little story, all our test system these days run of an SSD with applications running from a NAS storage solution.
