Intel 520 Series 240GB Review
28 May 2012
Summary: The 520 series may not be very special, but at least it’s up to current-gen standards, and it replaces the kinda crappy Marvell-powered 510 series. On the other hand, $510 for a 240GB drive is a lot, considering the Patriot Pyro SE is $50 cheaper and just as good. Intel’s betting that its reputation for reliability still means something to SSD buyers. We think it does, but does it mean they’ll pony up an extra 50 bucks?
Pros: Fast SF-2281 controller and 25nm NAND; Intel reliability.
Cons: $50 more expensive than near-identical drives from Patriot and OCZ.
Conclusion: IMPORTANT: Although the rating and final score mentioned in this conclusion are made to be as objective as possible, please be advised that every author perceives these factors differently at various points in time. While we each do our best to ensure that all aspects of the product are considered, there are often times unforeseen market conditions and manufacturer changes which occur after publication that could render our rating obsolete.
Pros: Fastest SATA storage device ever tested, Delivers over 83K IOPS performance in IOMeter, Outstanding 559/528 MBps read/write speed with ATTO, Built-in 256-bit AES data encryption, Hardware-level data compression preserves NAND longevity, 5-Year Intel product warranty support, Enhanced power-loss data protection, Lightweight compact storage solution, Resistant to extreme shock impact, Low power consumption may extend battery life
Excerpt: On paper the new Intel 520 Series appears to be just another Team SandForce release like several of the products we've looked at for the last thirteen months. The SF-2000 Series controllers hit media testing labs in December 2010 and client drives based on the consumer SF-2281 were on display at CES in 2011. Around the same time we started hearing about a high performance Intel SSD based on SandForce's first SATA III controller.
Intel SSD 520 Series 240GB Retail Solid State Drive Bundle Review
6 February 2012
Summary: The Intel SSD 520 breaks through setting new SATA6 performance standards due to three important features: High quality synchronous NAND, a more mature controller and more polished firmware. It’s obvious Intel engineers made the right choice holding back Cherryville so they could tune everything right down to the firmware. This allows consumers to be able to plug and play with little to no fuss.
Excerpt: A few days ago we looked at the latest Solid State Drive from Intel – the 520 series, codenamed ‘Cherryville’. The drive is built around ‘compute quality’ 25 nanometer NAND flash memory and offers a claimed maximum sequential read speed of 550 MB/s. It claimed our top award earlier this week, thanks to the class leading performance and reassuring 5 year warranty.
