I wanted to love this SSD but it was DOA

Call_Them_As_I_See_Them, Amazon
10 November 2013
  • Summary: I have star envy: I would love to have had the same experience as people who rated this SSD 5 stars, but mine was DOA. I purchased it in 2011, right before Uncle shipped me off to Korea. It sat undisturbed until recently when I returned to the USA and started a new build.

Died faster than regular drive

Greg G., Newegg
17 July 2012
  • Pros: I loved the speed. Got a fast score from Windows 7
  • Cons: , but it died in 9 months. That's too fast for me and too expensive to have dud out like that. Of course I expected for the huge amount of money that it would last longer than that. Big Bummer.

Lenovo T520 + Intel 510 = 40 second warm boot

Jason L., Newegg
10 January 2012
  • Summary: If this issue sees resolution from either manufacturer, I will return and increase the rating.
  • Pros: It is fast (unless you reboot it in a Lenovo laptop) and large enough to be used for the intended task.
  • Cons: Lenovo T520 + Intel 510 = 40 second warm boot delays due to an incompatibility with Lenovo's Thinkvantage Active Protection Sensor Diagnostics. Basically, on warm boot, it hangs at POST displaying Thinkvantage Active Protection Sensor Diagnostics for 40 seconds before continuing to boot. Look, I ...

Drive failed within 6 months

RampantAndroid, Amazon
9 January 2012
  • Summary: The drive is plenty fast, but has begun to hard lock in windows. Windows passed it on a chkdsk run, but the Intel SSD utility is reporting a read error (with no proper information as to what the failure is - it just tells you to contact Intel. How wonderfully cryptic.

Slow/ Won't work on a Mac

Aileron, Amazon
23 December 2011
  • Summary: If you are buying an SSD to see a dramatic increase in speed, do not get this. Intel is using a Marvell controller to save money, and as with most Marvell controllers, the performance is less than stellar. I noticed no real-life improvement over an existing RAID 0 set up.

BSOD total crash

Michael E., Newegg
6 December 2011
  • Pros: Fast!
  • Cons: BSOD followed by total failure of all data on SSD. Now unable to boot Windows 7 from SSD and all data lost!

Disappointing drive locks up regularly

Stephen F. Abbot "Stephen Abbot", Amazon
13 November 2011
  • Summary: Tried to use the drive as a primary OS drive for a new ASUS G53SX-A1 with Win 7 64 bit. Following installation, OS would regularly freeze lasting on average 30-90 seconds 1-5 times an hour. Some research found numerous reports of freezing, or worse BSOD common to the drive.

Have had 2 fail in 5 months

Geoffrey S., Newegg
29 July 2011
  • Summary: Too many people write glowing reviews within the first few days of ownership. Don't think that these glowing reviews mean that the drive is reliable. The glowing reviews are mostly focused on performance. Also, manufacture's published "mean time between failures" is very misleading.
  • Pros: Its faster than a conventional drive, but ...
  • Cons: Its not reliable, at least not for very long. See my review from mid March ("about as useful as a rock"). The first lasted 5 days, and the 2nd about 4 months. Yes, it is fast when you first set it up, but the probability of failure is much higher than that of a conventional hard drive. its very t...

After 5 days its about as useful as a rock!

Geoffrey S., Newegg
19 March 2011
  • Summary: I am beginning to understand why these things are non-refundable. I suspect it is because SSDs in general right now are very unreliable. What I do not understand is how SSD manufacturers get away with claiming mean times between failures that imply these things last for years and years.
  • Pros: As promised in my prior review just below this one, I am (unfortunately) updating my review. It worked really well for four days in a row, and then died when I tried to boot it on day 5. I guess this is what I get for writing a rave review about Intel SSDs. Given this experience, I would prefer m...
  • Cons: It completely failed after just 4 days.

Not up to Intel's standards

Gregory R., Newegg
8 March 2011
  • Summary: I own and love 2x x25-m g2's and an x25-v. I expected this to perform at least as well if not better. Unfortunatly the Marvell controller Intel chose for this drive is far below the performance of their own controller. So much for high end, this is badly outperformed by their 2-year old design.
  • Pros: Comes with a really nice sticker.
  • Cons: On a fresh install of Windows 7, some interaction between the MARVELL controller in this drive and my s3420gplx (Intel) motherboard causes a 90-120 second pause during boot. I did numerous A/B tests between an x25-m g2 and this drive. The x25-m takes 6 seconds in the pre-animation starting Window...
