Summary: The name of this drive should be changed to "Deadstar". It wasn't even recognized at all by my computer. I had to send it back for a refund. This drive was represented as a "new" drive. It may have been unused, but it was not new.
This drive purchased brand new malfunctioned on day 2 of having it.

Summary: I purchased this drive to function as the main back up drive for my Mac Pro desktop. The specifications on the drive I ordered are identical to the one that came with the Mac Pro seven years ago. The drive that was sent to me appeared the same and has the same label and identifiers.
Summary: Had good experience with a 250 GB Hitachi Deskstar.
Pros: Good manual on Hitachi's web site.
Cons: Died in a few months of light usage. Several bad blocks developed in the middle, and I lost data. While I can reformat and perhaps use again with the existing bad blocks, the drive does not inspire confidence. After low-level reformatting, the bad blocks were still there. Summary: im angry i had to wait thu my warenty to find out the borad i bought was junk. kinda angry
Pros: they shipped me a new one
Cons: took 3 weeks for rma, i live on the east coast and it took 3 days to get there then they had it on there dock for 4 days then after about 6 more and 3 phone calls they said they would overnight it to me and that took 5 days aswell
Summary: I ordered a Western Digital at first but that drive was back-ordered and I was in a pinch so I bought this. Big Mistake there. This will be my last Hitachi Death-star.
Pros: Price, 500gb, lasted a year and a half.
Cons: Disk was purchased October 2008. Today my SMART software detected seek time performance degrading which indicates mechanical failure. I have a estimated disk death time of March 20, 2010. Drive has started to really slow down. Backing up everything as we speak.
Cons: Hitachi rebate program is horrible, customer service leaves much to be desired. VERY hard to get ahold of (long waits and many prompts) and always have excuse. Still have not received rebate after 9 months. And it shows valid....LOL
Summary: All HD manufacturers these days make poor quality drives. I have several old drives that are still functioning today... why can't I find a drive that I don't have to replace anually. Bought a low end SSD... comparable speed, no hesitation... no brainer.
